I am going to give up the tv (except for The Apprentice and Brothers and Sisters ) and i want to read more - I love reading but just don't get the time (because I watch too much tv in the evenings )

Anyway I digress - I want to know which books I MUST read. What would you say are the must read books of a life time?

It depends on what you're looking for. At uni when I had time to myself I read Huxley, Tolstoy, Orwell, Steinbeck, Dostoevsky, Achebe, Freud, to name but a few (all excellent writers, great thought-provoking stuff, btw) but now I'm an old bat (46) with 2 under-10s who drive me to drink (literally), I read to escape. I can't read drivel (sorry, Danielle Steele - couldn't get through 2 pages of one of yours!) but Anita Shreve, Rose Tremain, James Clavell, Anne Tyler, Khaled Hosseini... they're all excellent for my current mental state. Good writing but not too much concentration required. Amazon is good for finding new fiction - readers' reviews tell you what you need to know.
