....and wondered if you had any recommendations for me please along similar lines. Oh have also read Q&A (now Slumdog Millionaire)
Couldn't get into A Suitable Boy, Wild Swans or Captain Corelli - just so you get an idea of what I like!
Thanks very much in advance...

Try - The Outcast - Sadie Jones
A Quiet Belief in Angels - R J Ellory
Mudbound - Hillary Jordan
The 19th Wife - David Ebershoff
The Cellist of Sarajevo - Stephen Galloway

I am just about to start The Book Thief for my book group - any good?

newpup · 20/05/2009 14:09

Sorry just realised these books are not really in a similar vein to those you mentioned Just my last few good reads. Hope it helps anyway!

twinmam · 20/05/2009 14:16

Oh what fab reading you've just had Bakersman. I love all of those. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is lovely as is the Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. Not sure how/if they are similar to the books you've mentioned other than that they were beautiful and made me cry. Oh and have another go at Captain Correlli as it is worth persevering with once you get past the silly bit in the beginning. Anything by Isabel Allende is kooky and magical like the Book Thief.

Bakersman · 20/05/2009 14:26

Oh excellent, will give me something to look for when I'm out later and the rest can go on my wishlist!!
newpup - I loved the Book Thief, after I got over the icky thought about Death being the narrator (just me being daft!) Enjoy!
twinmam - what is the best order to read Isabel Allende?

I loved all of those listed in the original post and also enjoyed this

A great one to start with is Eva Luna as it is a stand alone story and probably my favourite. It's also quite short but is just beautiful. You can't go far wrong with any of her books, I don't think.

Second The Outcast- fab book

The Caged Virgin: A Muslim Woman's Cry for Reason- Ayaan Hirsi Ali

The Saffron Kitchen - Yasmin Crowther

Half of A Yellow Sun- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The Secret River - Kate Grenville

And I really love William Boyd- The Blue Afternoon and Brazzaville beach are both fab.

newpup- thanks for yours- they've given me some ideas too

northernrefugee39 · 20/05/2009 19:27

Twinman- oh yes- Isabel Allende - strange atmosphere but beautiful. They remind me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who I loved when I was younger...

There's this other writer, semi autobiagraphical, about South America. She married an older man she met in Clapham aged 17 and went out to live this extraordinary life.
Therese du Pelez something? She had a long triple barrelled name...

surreylady · 20/05/2009 20:12

Outcast really enjoyed and also Notes from an exhibition Patrick Gale - really enjoyed that too. I also liked Revolutionary Roard, Richard Yates and I also Liked We need to talk about Kevin - Lionel Shriver - although I don't think everyone does

twinmam · 20/05/2009 20:46

Surreylady - I loved We need to talk about Kevin - a superb book IMO altho most of my Book Club hated it! Actually, loved is prob the wrong word as it's so disturbing but really very good.

Northern - Half of a Yellow Sun wonderful
