Just read "a short history" by Trollope, was tripe, utter UTTER tripe. Slogged to the end.

Am reading all of my old Bill Brysons, and have picked up Angelas Ashes again (for the 300th time!)

But need something really good, whats the best book you have read in ages??

Am desperate got to keep my mind occupies waiting for bloody scans etc.

I.m currently reading The 19th Wife which is part current murder mystery and part historical memoir of the woman who campaigned for the end of polygamy in the Mormon church. It's very thought provoking but a damn good read too.

Fox, are you on commission or something?

AbleSister · 13/04/2009 18:30

ProoDense · 13/04/2009 18:32

Oh yes forgot I'd read 19th wife.

Very good.

Would recommend also.

AbleSister · 13/04/2009 18:32

No but I know who wrote it and think it deserves a wider audience tbh

apart from that, I cannot think of anything good I have read for ages grrrr. Hate that.

ProoDense · 13/04/2009 18:35

very interesting, will get a copy and read.

InSearchOfLostKeys · 13/04/2009 18:37

If you like factual too, recently finished 'Down and out in Paris and London' by George Orwell, about when he was er..down and out in, well you get the idea? V good book...

For fiction 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt currently has me gripped, or for something lighthearted 'Mapp & Lucia' by E.F.Benson? -got the idea for that one from a thread a bit like this

janeite · 13/04/2009 19:56

Stuart Maconie is really irritating though, unlike Bryson!

'Middlesex' is good but his first one, 'The Virgin Suicides' is even better.

How about some Evelyn Waugh or Wodehouse?

Daughter's of Jerusalem and When we were Bad-Charlotte Mehndleson

ah great Northern. It's so exciting having a friend write a book, especially such a good book. It's amazing (to me, who cannot write a thing!) that she was so clever and so brilliant. Not that she isn't clever or brilliant but you know what I mean.

And it seems like the press really like it. I read it and loved it but you never know what others are going to say. Would love to hear what you think. It's her first book too .

pollywobbledoodle · 14/04/2009 02:22

everything is illuminated by j safran foer is probably my best recent read

all time fave is bill bryson's mother tongue about the origins of the english language [or thunderbolt kid for a tea spitting laugh]

DeathbyDora · 14/04/2009 02:36

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - bought for me by a friend and I wasn't too sure but couldn't put it down in the end.

Story in the form of letters, about a writer just after WWII looking for book inspiration and finding it in Guernsey when talking to locals about the German Occupation. Shocking, sad, romantic - really good!

Also The Soloist about the classically trained musician discovered living down and out in LA by a journalist. Just been made into a movie with Robert Downey Jnr & Jamie Fox. That was more heavygoing but really interesting.

I won't talk about the utterly brainless shite I also read regularly as these books makes me look terribly deep and interesting....
