Have just read a fictionalised version of Scott's bid for the pole - fab;
'A Study In Scarlet' - good but I realised after a few pages that I'd already read it;
Terry Pratchett's 'Nation' - ok;
The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn - didn't like it much;
The Gargoyle - quite liked this one.

I have just abandoned:
The Glass Book Of The Dream Eaters - over written and tedious;
Shakespeare's Wife by Germaine Greer - too much like very hard, not very satisfing work.

I have a Peter Carey waiting, something about Troy but can't remember what it's called and then I will be bookless again.

I am not a happy bunny when I am bookless!

Tia

Might be a bit off-piste but have you tried any of Georgette Heyer's crime novels? They have more ironic humour to them than Agatha Christie, mostly set in the 1930s or thereabouts.

I don't know whether you'll go for these or not - but Christopher Brookmyre is one of my favourite authors for murder mystery type stuff - verrrry Scottish, black humour, love the titles of his books.

Mmm I do quite fancy trying some Georgette Heyer - can never find any in the library though.

order online from library....often in within a day or 2 at ours

How about Doris Lessing? I read Mara and Dan recently, very thought provoking.

And I'm going to be really really boring and, as usual, recommend anything by Robertson Davies.

URSUL, UNDER by Imogen Hill, a fabulous tardis of a book. Felt like the end of an affair when it was over.

EachPeachPearMum · 02/04/2009 21:00

janeite- I have a book by the Nathaniel's nutmeg author... and 'Ursula, Under' here if you want them instead of the book circle book, which I could just send directly to Flame... as I have to send her something by post anyway...

janeite · 02/04/2009 21:05

Think I've read everything by Mr Nutmeg - have forgotten his real name! Tell me more about Ursula, Under please!

I have now only got 15 essays to mark - I have been like a coursework machine this week!

Ursula under is about a young girl who falls down a mine shaft... and her extended family- set in different times, and places- I really enjoyed it... but I read it when dd was a newb, so it may not be as good as I remember

janeite · 02/04/2009 21:08

Gosh - right - erm - not Lovely Bones-ish?
If not, and if not family-saga-ish then yes please! But what if I would really like the bookclub one? Decisions....decisions...

Am about to do an Amazon order - any more last minute ideas please?

OP posts:
EachPeachPearMum · 03/04/2009 22:21

oh I so want to do an amazon order... my basket has about £500 worth of stuff in it that I keep saving for later

janeite · 09/04/2009 18:45

Thanks to those of you who suggested Georgette Heyer. I read 'Sylvester' yesterday and really enjoyed it - like Jane Austen crossed with Jilly Cooper. Dp looked down his nose at it but I can live with that! It reminded me of reading Virginia Andrews, Jilly Cooper, Jane Austen and Evelyn Waugh as a teenager.
