Whilst watching Jeremy Paxman striding around Highgate cemetery in The Victorians I had a sudden flashback to a book I have read but I can't get enough back to remember it properly IYSWIM.

The book begins I think in a cemetery with a boy whose father is the gravedigger - he helps him and at some point in the book the child falls into one of the graves and can't get out again? He meets a girl who is from a wealthier background - I think she is a mourner at a funeral -and a friendship of sorts develops although I have an idea there is something odd about her. I get stuck here - have no idea about the rest of the book but its driving me mad- like waking up and trying to capture a dream.

Put me out of my misery!

Nooo, I wonder what it is.

It's not Great Expectations is it? there's graves at the start, and a girl from a wealthier background, and also something odd about her.

No luckily it isn't - or I would have to slink away from MN with my tail between my legs!

Golly. Wonder what it is then. Is it a modern novel?

I think so - starting to worry its a TV movie now.

Thank you for caring

A TV movie? OMG. We're never going to get it now. Though the whole father / son gravedigger family firm thing should be a give away.

There is a section on abebooks.co.uk called Book Sleuth, I think...I bet they would be able to help you!

snice · 08/03/2009 22:42

Right - have posted thread on Abe so will await developments. But told DP earlier that MN would know the answer and so a final shemeless bump.

Falling Angels by Tracey Chevalier? Bought it but have not read it yet. Seem to remember from the blurb that it is set around a graveyard and that the son of the gravedigger is one of the main characters. Not sure about the falling in the grave bit!

snice · 09/03/2009 21:40

Oh God I think thats it! I have no memory of the title or of the cover (from looking at it on Amazon) but its the sort of thing I might have borrowed from the library as I've read others of hers.

Thank you so much and well done for beating the bods on AbeBooks to the answer.
