We are having the first meeting of our book group this week and I have asked everyone to suggest a book for the coming months. I have never read any of John Updike's books but, as he died recently, I have been reading quite a lot of articles about him and would like to suggest one of his books as my pick. I am thinking probably Couples would have the most general appeal but would like views please from people who have read more of his work. A general view as to whether he would be a good book group choice would also be helpful. We are just starting and I don't want to put anyone off!

Thank in advance!

It's been a long time since I read updoke but I remember I did like his book of short stories 'The AFterlife and other stories'.

Can't tell you more than that!

I really liked "Couples" - I first read it twenty years ago when it was vaguely daring and meant nothing to me, and again a year or two ago and thought it stood the test of time.

The rabbit ones are OK, and there'e a fairly recent one called (I think) "S" which I thought was OK too (and less heavy going than Couples/Rabbit).

PS just had a look on Amazon to jog mymemory of what else I'd read, "Seek my Face" was really good, and "Villages" is the sequel to "Couples".

I liked the Rabbit ones but that really was years ago

Thank you Tangarine and Pointydog. I'm not sure whether I should go for Updike as my choice particularly if it's quite heavy going. I am wavering and have to choose by tomorrow evening!
