I've just finished one that you might like, hang on and I shall go and find it...

It's called 'Case Histories' by Kate Atkinson.
It's sort of a detective story. I found it a wee bit hard to get into at first (it's not the usual kind of book I read) but the more I got into it, the better it was, and I was quite sad to have got to the end last night. It left me with loads to think about.

I've just finished the 2nd of Tory Hayden's novels - The Sunflower forest which is good - read in one sitting.

Tory Hayden's work is good. I've read a few of hers.

You might consider 'The Unburied', by Charles Palliser (1999). It's a mystery novel although not, exactly, a detective story. It's set in the 19th Century. The protagonist is a university fellow who travels to a small (fictitious) Cathedral town over Christmas to explore a new avenue of research. He stays with an old friend of his with whom he lost touch in ambiguous circumstances.

The plot follows several mysteries; the protagonists research into what exactly happened when the Anglo-Saxon King Alfred beseiged the town, a single question which could turn scholarship of the era on its head and make or break the protagonists career; the truth behind two murders in the town during the civil war and a murder that happens that Christmas under his very nose. It's beautifully written and the chillingly icey Midwinter atmosphere is a beautiful foil to the cosy warmth of an exquisite drawing room mystery in the old Victorian style.

For a very light read which will lift your heart, you could try Alexander McCall Smith - either the Sunday Philosophy Club or Ladies Detective agency. Not what I usually read, but my doctor recommended them, and they are charming.

I've thought about the Ladies Detective Agency. I shall give it a go now that it's been recommended, Jux.

sixth lamentation is good. Just finished Reluctant Fundamentalist. good but not fab. I didn't really get on with the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

The Brutal Art - Jesse Kellerman, is good, just finished it.

Also, When will there be good news - Kate Atkinson

What's the one about Miss Smilla and snow actually called? That's really good, I'd recommend it, if only I could remember the exact title (never mind the author!)
