I've not read it but heard a lecture by the woman who wrote 2 in a bed about a book she wrote comparing how babies are brought up in different cultures. Deborah somebody I think.

deborah jackson, did a google search but can't see anything sounding like its about different cultures. Would be very interested to read if anyone knows where to find such book? or lecture Julie mentioned

Life After Birth - Every womans guide to the first year of motherhood, by Wendy Blumfield. It's a text-book type read, very interesting and looks at issues from both male and female aspects, comparing mainly British, American and Jewish cultures. ISBN 1-85230-351-4

raising boys by steve biddulph has some interesting anecdotes about other cultures

A great book is Christina Hardyment's Dream babies From Locke to Spock.

It doesn't really compare across cultures but across time. From the eighteenth century to the late twentieth. A fascinating insight into how many trends in parenting are not new at all but a rehash of old ideas and a more balanced view of a victorian childhood.

Quite hard to get hold off, the american version is more availbale than the english ( that is called Dream babies three centuries of good advice on childcare) but well worth the read.
