Could anyone identify this book set in Malaysia from very scanty clues?!

It's fiction, set in Malaysia, mostly Kuala Lumpur if I remember rightly. My memory of the characters is almost non-existant but I think there were two Western women visiting for an extended length of time. There was also a local man who was a main character; I think he could have been described as somewhat 'greasy', large, and I think he owned a shop in Chinatown? The main thread of the story may have been connected to tracing/locating or buying a book.

If anyone can solve or shed some light on this mystery, I would be delighted and very impressed by your detective skills!! Fingers crossed!

The only thing I can think of is 'A Town Like Alice' but I don't think that's it...

when was it set?
could it be pre 1940 W Somerset Maugham?

Have you tried Abebooks.com - they have a section for this I think.

Good luck.

Thanks all suggestions esp. Abebooks...have used their site but only to buy so will give that a go.

Set in fairly recent times....post 1970's I think. Also think the author is Western but not so well known one that everyone would recognise.

Yes!! That's it! Thank you. Very impressed as my clues were hardly helpful or accurate. Peter Carey:"not too well known"
