What great books have been overlooked for adaptation into movies?

I'd love to see a movie of The Catcher In The Rye, but apparently J.D. Salinger has always refused to sell the rights.

What else are we missing out on - assuming a brilliant adaptation is acheived...

I hate it when they make books into films and usually avoid at all costs, although I did enjoy 'Twilight'

saying that, I second 'The Secret History'
