Whats the best Stephen King book?

OP posts:
justmummy · 13/04/2005 14:31

The Green Mile is a fantastic book - just like the film.

I also enjoyed Cujo - really scared me when i imagined myself in that position.

zaphod · 13/04/2005 14:42

Scariest- Shining
Epic - The Stand
Enjoyable read - It
and also loved Salems Lot.

Hated Pet Sematary, Misery, Thinner. Also liked the Long Walk. If you liked the SK books I do, you will probably also LOVE Ghost Story by Peter Straub.

zaphod · 13/04/2005 14:46

just remembered that for my degree, I did an extended essay on the parallels between modern horror fiction, using the Shining as an example, and Gothic literature from the 19th century.

BubblesDeVere · 13/04/2005 15:02

Rose Madder is fab

IT is fantastic and I also love the film.

Cujo, scared the living daylights out of me

Shining, love it.

Tommyknockers - Genius

The Green Mile - Genius x 10 film is fab

Firestarter - Brilliant

Christine - Very Very Good

Carrie is brilliant,

Needful Things - Fab

Nightmares and Dreamscapes - Rubbish

Eyes of The Dragon - Fabulous

Dance Macabre - Dire

Creepshow - Absolutely fabulous, but one of the reason I have a phobia about cockroaches

The Langoliers - Weird but brill

And my absolute favourite, which I read numerous times - The Dark Half

Can you tell I'm a Stephen King Fan?

BubblesDeVere · 13/04/2005 15:05

Might watch the shining tonight

TinyGang · 13/04/2005 19:45

Wow Zaphod - that sounds like a really interesting subject to study!

Bubbles - I saw Langoliers on TV (mentioned in earlier post) thanks for confirming it's SK, I wasn't sure. It was weird, you're quite right there!

marthamoo · 13/04/2005 19:47

Another vote for The Stand.

And I loved the Dark Tower books until the last one when I thought he completely lost the plot: I hated the device of writing himself into the story.

I have read everything he's had published. You could say I'm his No. 1 fan...

The Shining & Salem's Lot.

tiffini · 27/04/2005 21:27

I prefer Dean Koontz to Stephen King, he waffles far to much for me, But Misery is a good book, far better than the film.

sansouci · 27/04/2005 21:31

Why have I revived this thread? Who knows. I used to love SK before he fell in love with himself. I liked him (his writing) much better when he was insecure. He became too full of himself & his success & began writing absolute crap.

sansouci · 27/04/2005 21:33

His books are always far better than the films. Even The Shining was a massive disappointment after having read the book. Misery is possibly an exception. Can't bring myself to re-read Pet Semetary after having had children.

maddiemo · 27/04/2005 21:33

The Stand {again]

serenity · 28/04/2005 16:44

I love SK, it's hard to pick out a favourite (easier I think to pick out the slightly more pants ones!) I think IT is the one I have read the most, and I really like the Dark Tower series.

Geralds Game - I can see why people don't like it, but it is the only one which has pages I can't actually read in one go. The whole hand peeling bit just freaks me out too much, ewww blergh stomach has started churning.

Enid · 28/04/2005 16:45

a few of his first/early ones were good Carrie, the shining, but the rest are dross IMO

Lara2 · 05/05/2005 20:19

I did Stephen King for my degree dissertation 20 years ago. It was pretty dire - but got me my honours! Best book is too hard to choose - probably Hearts in Atlantis, The Girl Who Loved Ton Gordon, or The Stand, unexpurgated version.
The film adaptations have got better over the years, but I hated The Shining so much - Shelley Duvall was totally mis-cast, much too whiney and whimpy! The mini series of both The Shining and The Stand were really good.
tiffini - can't bear Dean Koontz - have you ever noticed how the goodies are always poorish but with good taste, but the baddies are always rich with no taste at all? !
Stephen King still ranks up there with the best writers of all time - certainly one of the best story -tellers.

stitch · 05/05/2005 20:43

hated the stand. especially the long edition.
havent read any of his recent ones.
loved the shining, carrie, pet semetary.

KateandtheGirls · 05/05/2005 20:51
