I am reading Death Comes At the End. Set in Ancient Egypt. Was reminded of it becasue of a visit to the British Museum yesterday.

Anyway, I love her. Dated old twaddle though it is.

I read a lot of them when I was younger, my mum got them for me. I now have the entire collection - when I have nothing else to read, I read them again. Poirot is my favourite

Saltire · 16/02/2009 22:21

Sorry, pressed post! My faves are Cat among the Pigeons, The Body in the Library (although not a Poirot)

SweetestThing · 16/02/2009 22:23

Cat among the Pigeons but the best of all is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Brilliant

NoBiggy · 16/02/2009 22:26

Roger Ackroyd is good.

I like A Murder Is Announced, with the two old-school lesbians

I freecycled my entire collection to make some space. If I feel the need to read one I shall have to get along the library.

Fascinating story about The Mirror Crack'd - Christie lifted the main plot device from the tragic case of Hollywood actress Gene Tierney - so sad.

Saltire · 17/02/2009 09:10

The Mirror Cracked is a good book also.
The very first one I ever read was After the Funeral.

oxocube · 17/02/2009 18:08

Ooh, I loved that one too Saltire. Very tragic about The Mirror Cracked being based on a real event - I had no idea. Backs up the 'truth is often stranger than fiction' idea!

sunandmoon · 17/02/2009 18:22

My favourite author since I was 12 years old!!! The first one I read was "Les 10 petits negres", it was in French, not too sure what the translation in English is!

nkf · 17/02/2009 18:23

The English translation is unspeakable. The book is a good read though. I like the bit at dinner.

Have read all her books ...started reading them as a teenager ...great comfort reading

DisasterArea · 17/02/2009 18:29

oh i love agatha. (see profile i think)
i go through phases and reread them all. love the villagy, 1930sish, nice cars, housemaids, vicars, poor relations and gardners.
have got loads i've picked up at boot sales, train stations and charity shops. including loads of doubles because i can never remember which i've got.

oxocube · 17/02/2009 18:31

ditto Disaster

ZZZen · 17/02/2009 18:36

ooh yes Hercule Poirot saves me from going uttely INSANE at times. Thank YOU Agatha.

I like The Man in the Brown Suit and Body in the Library best I think. Neither of which has HP in it, come to think of it. Odd that.

RustyBear · 17/02/2009 18:44

Her autobiography is fascinating, it just reads like she wrote down her memories without much editing (except for The Incident of course!)

But even better is the book she wrote about the digs she went on with her archaeologist second husband 'Come Tell Me How You Live'

bronze · 17/02/2009 18:46

which is the one about poirot setting up the perfect suicide.
I've read most of the plenty of times but that one only once when younger.

Vicky31 · 17/02/2009 18:47

My favourites are They Came to Baghdad and The Moving Finger. Love Death on the Nile too, book and film.

ZZZen · 17/02/2009 18:48

yes I loved those autobiographical books too. Shame I have read them all. Wish there were still some left to discover.

RustyBear · 17/02/2009 18:52

Think the one you mean is Curtain, bronze

bronze · 17/02/2009 18:54

thanks Rusty. I have such vague recollections of it but I remember I found it fascinating. Must get hold of a copy again.

ZZZen · 17/02/2009 18:58

actually Sleeping Murder gives me the creeps. Don't know why really, the others don't.

Another one I don't like that much is Nemesis where Miss Marple goes on a bustour of stately homes and discovers what really happened to a young girl who disappeared a long time before.

Enjoy most of them though.

What was the title of the one with Tommy and Tuppence and Jane Finn etc that someone already mentioned. Is that Secret Adversary?

nkf · 17/02/2009 18:58

I've never read the autobiographies. They do sound good.

i feel an agatha phase coming on.
should ido the body in the library or murder on the orient express or cat amongst the pigeons?

nkf · 17/02/2009 19:05

I think Orient Express is exceptionally clunky. I rather like the professional dancer, gigolo watering hole atmosphere of Body in the Library. I'd probably go for that one.

DisasterArea · 17/02/2009 19:07

i do so wish i could go on the orient express. in 1923. looked it up once. is v expensive (without the time machine)will flick through and see how the fancy takes me
