My friends and I are true Harry Potter fans. We are now getting into Twilight. But what next?

Can anyone recommend anything? Your thoughts gratefully appreciated!

Oh this is a good one. I am looking for something else to read now these are finished. Am currently re-reading so hopefully will get some ideas here.

MadreInglese · 13/02/2009 13:24

I am Legend
(not one for the kids though)

Songbird · 13/02/2009 13:28

Ooh, Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen (aka The Old Kingdom Series) by Garth Nix (teenagey). Medalon, Treason Keep and Harshini (aka The Demon Child Trilogy) by Jennifer Fallon (older teenagey/adult, not 'adult' IYKWIM!). Both Aussie authors, weirdly. Have read both trilogies a few times - fabbo!

oggsdog · 13/02/2009 13:31

His Dark Materials?

Songbird · 13/02/2009 13:35

Oh yes, of course! I love the Sally Lockheart books by Phillip Pullman as well. Have just read the 4th (and latest of 5 I think) book of 'The Power of Five' books by Anthony Horowitz. They're great, really horrible in places!

The Dragonbone chair by Tad Williams and its sequels.

RoscoPColtrane · 13/02/2009 17:54

Another vote for the Dark Materials trilogy, they are fantastic.

Teddimac · 13/02/2009 18:07

Ooh yes, yet another vote for His Dark Materials and Sally Lockheart. I would also recommend The Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper which I adored as a teenager and am about to re-read this half-term .

janeite · 13/02/2009 18:59

"The Historian" and "Dracula" for non-crappy books about vampires.

Echo the Pullman recs.

Scorta · 13/02/2009 19:02

any Malory blackman
and Elizabeth Laird -

pointydog · 13/02/2009 19:02

Look at the teen fiction section

Jux · 13/02/2009 19:10

Diana Wynne Jones - anything of hers.

janeite · 13/02/2009 19:13

Are you a teenager, Winky?

How about some Neil Gaiman - "Neverwhere" is good; perhaps "Stardust".

HumphreyCobbler · 13/02/2009 19:18

The EarthSea Trilogy by Ursula Le Guin.

choccyp1g · 13/02/2009 19:20

The Bartemeus trilogy by Jonathon Stroud. (first one is called the Amulet of Samarkand ) Supposedly aimed at children, but I love them, and I am a Harry Potter fan.

ThumbLoveWitch · 13/02/2009 19:34

Terry Pratchett? Start at the beginning for best results, although he doesn't (imo) realy settle into his style until about book 4

Colonelcupcake · 13/02/2009 19:49

Trudi Canavans Black Magician Trilogy or Age of the five series

sleepyeyes · 13/02/2009 20:31

For Vampires I 2nd The Historian LOVE that book it has about 700 pages so no light read.

For a trillogy I would say His Dark Materials.

WinkyGirl · 13/02/2009 21:30

No I am nearly (whispers) 32, so very far from teenage years janeite I just enjoyed Harry Potter so much, after refusing to read the books for YEARS, that now I am keen to read similar stuff.

Lol.

There is a very good series beginning with "Across The Nightingale Floor" which is a teenage Japanese warrior series: very good indeed; not the humour of HP but an epic battle / love story over several books.

janeite · 13/02/2009 21:52

And try Gaiman's "Anansi Boys" - tis an adult book but really good fun.

TotalChaos · 15/02/2009 20:35

The Night Watch quarter by Sergei Lukyanenko

Ooh yes robin hobb! - farseer, liveships and fools ones are amazing

Agree with Abhorsen and Dark Materials trilogies

Spooks apprentice etc - easy and quite young, but still good.

Garth Nix - Mister Monday etc?

DH is muttering about Name of the Wind (I think) too
