Which world would you like to live in? For me it's Pern every time. No matter how many fabulous books I read (and I've read 100s. Maybe 1000s), that is the only world I actually want to go and live in. It may be because of the dragons of course...

"Discworld is a bit two-dimensional" Are you speaking literally or metaphorically there fishie?

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 17:44

Fantasy worlds never seem to have very good plumbing. This is a problem for me.

I guess if I could be rich (and able to travel, and preferably able to channel) I wouldn't mind giving the world of the Wheel of Time a go.

nooka · 15/02/2009 19:20

Oh, I loved The Name of the Wind. Can't wait for the next volume. Thing is that most of the worlds are not exactly balanced, and "may you live in interesting times" is a curse after all. I mean I love George R R Martin, but what an appalling world to live in (or at least what a terrible time to live through). I wouldn't mind meeting some of the heros from my books, I just don't want to live there! Few of them mention high quality obstetric care or good opticians for a start, so it would be fairly likely I'd be dead there.

I think I'm in the Pern camp too. I'd either like to be a Queen rider (obviously) or a Harper, or failing that, a Lady Holder.

I would have to go to Annares
But if that isn't fantasy enough, I'd probably choose Valdemar. Even the peasants there seem to get a reasonably good deal

SoupDragon · 16/02/2009 20:36

Now, I want a bronze dragon... which could prove tricky at some point!

I love that there are so many votes for Valdemar, one of the few worlds where women are equal. However being a Herald would be too much like hard work, so I'd prefer to live in the Culture instead if that's ok.

TigerFeet · 25/02/2009 18:40

Pern every time

I would be a dragonrider. I know that the girls who impressed green dragons didn't shorten their names, but I think T'Feet has a certain ring to it

I'd like to be an Edenist and have a long holiday on the habitat Tranquillity in The Reality Dysfunction (Peter F. Hamilton). Not sure I could live there forever though. More sci-fi than fantasy though. Would love to live at Rivendell with Elrond and co.

I have been reading all together too many urban dark fantasy novels lately.. which are all very simelar to now but with magic to deal with too.. though saying that If I could live in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake or Merry Gentry worlds and obviously have the magic to go with it I would be quite happy.

obviously anywhere else with a more mideveal type landscape would have to live with Elves or dragons.. I need hot water for baths and showers.

Pern is good though most of the time you have to live in a cave and really I need a castle..

I'd really just end up being a scullery maid somewhere or mucking out dragon crap.

AnnVan · 05/03/2009 10:19

Oh great thread! Um when I was younger I used to fantasise about living on Pern. I used to oretend I was Menolly, surviving on her own in her cave with her 9 fire lizards.
Now - Discworld would be fun to visit (if I could be a witch) But I think my vote goes for the Malazan empire - the women seem to do as well as the men there, and you can ascend to godhood.
The Old Kingdom would be fascinating but a little too populated by Zombies etc.
