Hi

I was thinking of starting the Terry Pratchett library, do you have to read them in order and if so what is it? Does it all carry on and refer to other things that happened in earlier books etc

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 11/02/2009 17:48

No need to read in order, I think I started with Mort. I'd read the earlier ones first tho as the later ones do depend on a certain amount of prior knowledge.

WobblyPig · 11/02/2009 17:57

I started with Mort also. In retrospect it would have been better to start with the Colour of Magic ( I think) but made sense in it's own right. Some of the books about specific characters are better read in order e.g, the police lot, but I have read many out of order.

pooter · 11/02/2009 18:00

personally, i would read them in order - just because so many characters develop through the series, but - if you havent read any PTerry before, i would read "Good Omens". its not part of the discworld series, but is great and gets you hooked on him!

I will just go and get a book so i can tell you the order....

pooter · 11/02/2009 18:05

on second thoughts, i might choose to read al the guards books first, then all the witches, then all the death books, then fill in the gaps

i've put a '*' next to the guard books and a '&' next to the witches books. Can you tell im a tad obsessed - beware - it could happen to you!!
the colour of magic
the light fantastic
equal rites
mort
sourcery
wyrd sisters &
pyramids
guards guards *
eric
moving pictures
reaper man
witches abroad &
small gods
lords and ladies &
men at arms *
soul music
interesting times
maskerade &
feet of clay *
hogfather
jingo
the last continent
carpe jugulum &
the fifth elephant *
the truth
thief of time
nightwatch *
monstrous regiment
going postal
thud

AnnVan · 11/02/2009 18:39

I agree with pooter - the disc books essentially have a bunch of different series: Death books, guards books wizard books (feat rincewind) and the witches books.
I read Guards Guards first (when I was 13) and have never looked back!

EffiePerine · 11/02/2009 19:49

also the first two or three books are not that hot (IMHO)

EffiePerine · 11/02/2009 19:50

from the early ones, wd prob go for Mort, Wyrd Sisters and Guards Guards

LoveBuckets · 11/02/2009 19:51

Guards Guards because Sam Vimes is soooooo cooool and not annoying and hapless like Rincewind.

edam · 11/02/2009 19:56

I wouldn't start with the first two - The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. He was just getting into his stride then, IMO. Try Mort, Wyrd Sisters or Guards, guards. But yes, characters do develop as the series progresses so if you want to keep up, I'd read them in order from your starting point.

Oh, and agree about Good Omens, it's fab!

(Lucky you having all the Pratchett novels to play with. Would be so nice to go back again and meet them all for the first time!)

tumtumtetum · 11/02/2009 20:03

Def start with guards ones or death ones. I never got the hang of rincewind at all!

My fave is thief of time...

neversaydie · 11/02/2009 20:10

I actually would suggest starting with Equal Rites. It is the first one to feature Granny Weatherwax, who takes on as an apprentice the 7th child of a 7th child. The joke is that the apprentice 'should' have been a boy and is in fact a girl, Esk. Pratchett has a wonderful time confounding stereotypes. The section that got me hooked was the one describing the curriculum that Granny Weatherwax uses to teach the child witching. It features mucking out the goats alongside the use and abuse of herbs and various other essentials.

I love the disc world books!

Tortington · 11/02/2009 20:11

idont read them in order - my fave is the theif of time too

tumtumtetum · 11/02/2009 20:12

two votes there then!

RustyBear · 11/02/2009 20:14

Or you could start with one of the ones that isn't really in a series -like my favourite, Small Gods

EffiePerine · 11/02/2009 20:20

my fave is Witches Abroad

'never trust a dog with orange eyebrows'

lollystar · 11/02/2009 20:23

I started with Eric then went to the colour of magic. Read them in order from there. I love them, you know it's a good book when it's had you laughing out loud on a bus full of people

pooter · 11/02/2009 20:26

yep, the first few are not much cop really (although i feel like such a traitor for saying it!). I love the guards ones and the witches ones best. I secretly want to be Angua, but i think im more like Magrat .

Going postal is v good, although i miss my old fave characters. I wish i hadnt read any and was starting again too.

Wolfcub · 11/02/2009 20:31

I don't think they need to be read in order, I think I read the fifth elephant first and then just picked up what I fancied as and when in no particular order. I don't feel like I missed anything doing it that way.

edam · 11/02/2009 20:31

I'd like to be Susan. Or Nanny Ogg.

drlove8 · 11/02/2009 20:59

id just grab as many as you can and read away, thud is my favorite, its just so funny when the trolls and dwarfs are on about khoom valley, and sam vines doing the i want my cow!.am on the last hero now, another based in anka-morpork! small gods is very good too........ shame that terry pratchet is now suffering from alzithmers?(spelling)cant think of a worse thing for a writer

LoveBuckets · 11/02/2009 21:22

Neversaydie, it's just like Kung Fu movies isn't it, you have to learn humility (wax on, wax off).

I would love to be Granny Weatherwax but in my heart I know I am Nanny Ogg.

Colonelcupcake · 11/02/2009 21:33

Can I just say WOW! and thanks so much for everyones help!

OP posts:
neversaydie · 11/02/2009 21:34

I suspect Kung Fu Panda comes even closer. But you've got to have respect!

I too aspire to be like Granny Weatherwax, but fear I am closer to Nanny Ogg. I fear both of them would think I was most like Magrat!

AnnVan · 11/02/2009 23:41

I too would love to be Granny Weatherwax, but think I'm more Magrat like. I don't tie a band round my head and shout hiya at mirrors though. I also think the first couple aren't that good, but love the rest. Was so gutted when his Alzheimers was announced It's tradition in my family that I get the new Pratchett book every year for my birthday or Christmas.

tumtumtetum · 12/02/2009 14:29

I'd love to be Nanny Ogg
