I've heard of it through Mumsnet (I've learned more here than I ever did at university). I'm not that keen on it, but perhaps I just haven't read any good stuff.

Mostly male esp the Torchwood, as they have a head start with Captain Jack & Ianto! But some of the Buffy is femslash.

DH writes Captain Scarlet fanfic, with some crossovers into other Gerry Anderson & Dr Who, but definitely not slash, rather to my relief, bearing in mind that most of his characters are actually puppets. In fact it must be pretty difficult to write any sex scenes for say Captain Scarlet and Rhapsody Angel - you'd always be wondering how to stop the strings getting tangled.....

I'm currently working my way through this lot - but I should warn you that a high percentage is excruciatingly bad....

I have some friends who write a lot of it. One started with Buffy and then expanded into original characters. Eventually puslished with an erotica small press.

I'm not a fan of Slash or any kind of Fan fiction in general, but there used to be a site dedicated to the worst of it, Godawful Fan Fiction, which I liked for a laugh.

There was a hilarious puppet sex scene on the Thunderbirds spoof 'Team America: World Police'. Just tried to find it on Youtube but it doesn't seem to be there.
