Do you think there should be a warning on books which feature bad things happening to children?

Three out of four of the last books I've read have had unexpected story lines about children. These weren't your Jodie Picoult type books where you would expect it. It just floors me when I read these things and puts me in bad form. Maybe I should stick to chick lit?

Funny - I posted yesterday about feeling distressed by The Suspicions of Mr Whicher! I hadn't realised when I bought it that it was about the murder of a toddler.

I don't think they can put a warning though. There are so many things, like drug abuse, alcoholism, etc., which might upset readers, but they can't pre-empt everything.

You're right, it wouldn't be possible. It does get you though doesn't it.

No I totally don't think books should come with warnings. You'd end up with the silly thing like there is with films where it says things like:
"Contains mild peril"
"Contains a not very stimulating sex scene and at least one post-coital cigar"
"Contains several very bad jokes and a long and boring story line involving sugared almonds and a three legged cow"
or whatever. Tis daft.

I am the same, i do not want to read about anything bad happening to children, women or general emotional bad stuff - i vet what i read very very carefully. Although right now im just reading a true story about a guy who murdered his wife

I read 2 books in a row when pg about bad things happening to pg women (& their babies), thought then that books needed some kind of warning system....

Impossible to manage though i would think.

Justkeepswimming - you may also wish to avoid watching Bodies on DVD, I did when I was pg and it was a foolish move as it shows the real stories in Obs and Gyn, or so it claims. Worth it though for the lovely Max Beasley...
