Just finished this wonderful piece of literature and can't wait to see the film

Touch a raw nerve with anyone? Feel trapped in mundane, suburban hell? Unfulfilled by motherhood and domesticity? Want to break out in a whim of creativity and individualism? Disillusioned with the Western dream of nice house, 2.4 children and well paid job? Did you identify with the characters?

Or were you unsympathetic with the characters? Are they selfish? Does to problem lie ultimately within their own marriage rather than the society they life in?

Duscussion mostly welcome!

Too right, and I like vodka martinis... and 1950s fashion, tbh.

Yes, there are lots of good movies around. Sadly, I'm in Italy now, and all the foreign movies get dubbed, which really grates me . Good night

It was meant to be "good night " actually.

Sorry good night!

I've just finished reading this.

I was wondering whether I'd find it uncomfortable reading but I didn't, largely I think because, although it was a very good portrait of a marriage breakdown, I found all the main characters so unlikeable. Frank, in particular, was a thoroughly cowardly and selfish individual but I couldn't really sympathise much with April either.

I wouldn't say I found it an enjoyable read but it did made me think. Looking foward to seeing the film.

I've just started reading this and am absolutely loving it. Don't know how it passed me by!

Haven't seen the film (and won't till I finish the book) but I hear it's quite true to the book. Would love to hear what people thought of it.

I think it's a fantastic book and I really rate it. An uncomfortable read at times ( self-recognition etc) but brilliant. DH originally recommended it to me as he loves Richard Yates. Neither of us can bear to go and see the film though - too agonising to watch I should think. I tried to get my book group to read it a few years ago and it was really hard to get hold of, so the film has at least revived in RY - obviously a good thing!

revived interest in RY I mean!
