ramon, have since read the bit at the back & realised my mistake. still would describe her writing in the way i did. had only just started it when i wrote that (got further today)

think i may look into marian keyes. local library ok, but not brill & may be able to order some. is she a uk author?

some of anita shreve a ilove, e.g. eden lake, but others not s good.

MsG · 05/01/2009 22:21

Marian Keyes is Irish - should be able to get her books in the library, I'd've thought.

I quite enjoy the Shopaholic books - so long as you don't expect them to be amazing, they're entertaining (though annoying at times.)

Never read Celia Ahern - not sure I will.

I love Anne Tyler - wouldn't compare her with chicklit authors myself though as I think she's in a different league.

Glad you agreed - didn't know if I was being a bit precious! (shock)

Not read Anita Shreve - oh yes, I have read one! It was great but I can't remember the name of it... Dearie me. There was a lot of snow in it and a baby...

MsG · 05/01/2009 22:39

Oh dear, I'm not v good at doing the smileys...

suzywong · 06/01/2009 00:57

well it would seem that the Official Recommender at Amazon needs a kick up the jacksy. From what you've all written it seems highly unlikely that C Ahern readers would get the same enjoyment as I from Jenny Eclairs skilfull use of the C word as a single and well placed paragraph.

light on snow msg

poss best shreve = fortune's rocks or eden close.

thought light on snow a bit too light by her standards - usually takes me a few days, that one just took an eve. they're a bit variable

i mentioned shreve as a possible alternative to ahearn etc.

have googled mary lawson & realise i've read one of hers. i think of her as 'chic lit' calibre & wasn't too impressed.

kickassangel · 06/01/2009 01:16

oth suzy, you have managed to inadvertantly recommend eclair to me. kind of the opposite intention of this thread, but i'm happy.

i need to browse my book shelves & think of something 'witty' to recommend to you.

i kind of think of eclair as the female equivalent of ben elton - part comic, part writer, similar sense of humour. but eclair has more brains & less bollocks methinks

stroppyknickers · 06/01/2009 08:10

JO Brand wrote a good book about growing yp in Hastings. Not comparing Shreve/Tyler more offering an alternative to the dreadful Aherne...

mm22bys · 09/01/2009 20:32

I did love the Shopaholic series when I read some a couple of years ago, but not sure what I would think now.

I liked Lisa Jewell, too, but I enjoyed her first the most.

I do not get Cecilia Ahern, I have read PS I Love You, which I couldn't stand (didn't bother to see the movie) it was just so badly written.

What's really got me stumped though is my book club thought "Thanks for the Memories" would be a good one? Maybe the fact it's got a miscarriage at the start??? Surely there's 1000s of more worthy books that could have been chosen?

nickschick · 09/01/2009 20:38

sneaks in >>>>>>bashes hornets nest ......shoutsjodie picoult and runs away

ladymariner · 09/01/2009 20:41

Hated C.aherne, but I do like cathy kelly, her books are easy to read if you're in the mood to read without having to think too hard

mm22bys · 09/01/2009 20:46

Haven't read Cathy Kelly, but I don't like Piccoult either - I read Salem Falls, quite enjoyed it, but haven't read anything since My Sister's Keeper which I was disappointed with and don't want to bother with her again!

llareggub · 09/01/2009 20:48

I'm with Quattrocento. Fourth rate stuff.

Still, if I was trapped in a snowstorm in a dark cave, I guess both authors would do to pass the time.

Now, if you witty and female, give Nancy Mitford a whirl. [obsessed]

LoveMyLapTop · 09/01/2009 20:49

not my cup of tea

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 10/01/2009 15:44

well, Nancy Mitford is a whole other league

preggydonuts · 10/01/2009 15:52

I LOVE the Mitfords.....
Now that was living!

Claire236 · 10/01/2009 16:22

I like Cecilia Ahern. Her books are pure escapism with no pretensions & what's wrong with that. I certainly wouldn't say anyone who likes Jenny Eclair would like her though, other than the authors both being female there are absolutely no similarities. Marian Keyes is fantastic - I've read everything of hers. I read one of the Shopaholic books & thought it was rubbish. I've read Jane Green, Catherine Alliott, Freya North etc but whilst they're ok, although I found Freya Norths characters get progressively more annoying with each book she writes, I wouldn't particularly recommend any of them.

Fleurlechaunte · 11/01/2009 15:59

Sorry I think they're shite. I felt depressed after reading something by Freya North (similar in style I think) at the effort expended and the time I will never get back again wasted on reading such a pile of mind numbing crap.

My SIL often buys them for me for Christmas as she knows I like "reading". They go unopened to the charity chop.

Fleurlechaunte · 11/01/2009 15:59

They also go to the charity shop.

giraffescantdancethetango · 11/01/2009 16:01

I love sophie kinsella, very easy to read at the end of the day. No thought required just very easy reading.

Diva0507 · 11/01/2009 16:09

i read all kinsella, shopaholic series ok, wedding and baby one funny readable, but sister , abroad ones are boring. i liked undomestic godess, though
never read ahern, scanned thru it and thought dont bother.
i like marian keyes, very lioght hearted and enjoyeable read. but not impressed with last on is it This charming man. cant beleive so many women get abused, bitten etc... believing in love. i suppose its kind of reality but i just cant believe so many woman be charmed by that. and also cross-dressing irish blokes,etc...
