Just wondered if anybody had ever used one of the new e-readers that you can get I think Sony do one?

Was thinking of getting one but wanted to know what people thought of them or whether you prefer the old way of reading from a book!!!

just seen it on the Gadget Show - looks cool.

Sony have made the screen matt so no glare like a pc screen (which would have stopped me wanting one) and the font is identical to a book.

Reckon it would come into its own on holiday or if you travelled a lot.

woah, just reminded me why I went on here in the first place, I thought I would have a look at an ereader and would quickly pop into MN to see what was happening. That was three 2.5hours ago and I forgot all about it.

Will have a look on the Sony site and see what you are on about.

Watching your thread - Cheers

Oops, obviously having a problem working out the time as well - I can read you know !

i fiddled about with one in waterstones recently. didn't like it that much, mainly because the controls are very right handed and i am not. the display was ok, don't know how it was in the hand it was firmly nailed down.

Gosh, they're not cheap are they £195 ! Just think how many paperbacks you could get for that.....

Hi my DH was very sweet and bought me one last month as a wedding gift.
Its a sony Ereader and I LOVE it.
Its so light and holds well over a hundred books.
Its not back light so doesn't strain the eyes. But you can get a cover with a light on it that works well and has 2 light strengths.
You can also add photos to it and music but I've never used these functions.
In the 3/4 weeks I've had it I've only had to charge it twice and I use it many hours a day so great battery power, also the book cover with the light uses to AA batteries and I still haven't had to change them.

I also handled the iliad but found it to large to feel comfortable and very un-book like.

You can also have the text 3 sizes also pretty good if you don't have great eyesight my 65 year old now has one as she has terrible eyesight and has limited reading material.

Fishie I am left handed and it really hasn't been a problem for me, there are also left handed page turn buttons on the wheel.

The Ereader is also Epub formatted which is the now agreed format that all the bookstores/publishers in europe have agreed to start using. To my knowledge it the only one doing that at the moment.

Hope that helps.

second vote: I have borrowed a friend's sony ereader and it was amazing. Great if they have a long train / tube commute. I didn't put books on there but I think there are loads of out of copyright ones avaiable.

I am hoping I will get one for xmas.

MissusHoHoHo · 09/12/2008 14:05

The Gadget Show mentioned that there were loads of download sites for older books but that new releases were in a certain format (can't rember what!) Waterstones online store supports this format though...

We would have to buy 2 cos DH takes forever to read a book whereas I whizz through them - would end up scrapping over it

sleepyeyes · 09/12/2008 18:28

MissusHoHo DH ended up buying himself one as well when he realized I was never going to share. EVER.
I read about 3 novels a week while he reads one a month.

I've even been going on unnecessary long train journeys just to use it while commuting.

Think there was another thread on here recently about e-readers..?

I managed to crash the Sony in our local Waterstones.... It looked nice though. I have read that it doesn't play nicely with Macs, if that's an issue for you; also the fact that you have to connect it to your PC to add new content can be a bit of a pain BUT - apparently upcoming versions will address this (at a price, no doubt).

I think they're lovely. There was a rumour I saw somewhere that John Lewis were going to be selling a red one around Christmas so I've had to avoid the gadgets dept. in that store just in case one just uncontrollably leaps into my hand

Hi I' m using mine on a mac ( a week after getting the sony ereader my usual windows operated laptop crashed) and it fine, you do need to use Adobe digital reader and use that as your libarary which was fine by me as imo its a much better libarary than the sony version.
Mind you I had already set up my sony ereader with windows so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

John Lewis do have the red one and have the exclusive rights to it. I really liked the red but didn't realise it was avalible in the UK.

Watersrtones are saying by early next year it will have another 20 thousand books added to there store.
