Anyone bought this book? I read a review of it at the weekend - it was so good I ordered it from Amazon. Just wondered if it's as good as the reviews!

ooohh - I like the sound of that!

jamescagney · 11/11/2008 16:13

Yep, got it out of the library a few weeks ago. It had menus and shopping lists, the lot, and costings for each week. I think it had some scary recipes with liver also which put me off a little.
went back in to library today but someone else has already nabbed it.
Twas excellent..

cheesesarnie · 11/11/2008 16:13

does it have many veggie ideas?or ones that could be converted?

Playmobil · 11/11/2008 16:20

Have just looked on the amazon link and it shows the index with all the recipes listed.

jamescagney · 11/11/2008 16:21

Yep, I think it did and it wasn't all wind inducing lentils, methinks. It was realistic food (as in stuff you would conceivably buy and eat not like "first catch a hare!"..- apart from the liver - boak!)

ohdearwhatamess · 11/11/2008 16:23

I bought a copy today, which should come tomorrow. I will report back.

BitOfFun · 11/11/2008 16:23

Hmm, will order from my local bookshop I think - thanks for the tip!

cheesesarnie · 11/11/2008 16:25

Wonder if the author is a mumsnetter...I mean the title of the book seems such a mumsnettish thing....iykwim....

traceybath · 11/11/2008 20:21

umm i've been reading it and am so far pretty unimpressed.

she professes to cook from scratch but uses stuff like gravy granules and also mentions her son taking smoked salmon sandwiches to school - hardly frugal.

so the jurys out in my opinion.

skinnygirlNOT · 11/11/2008 20:39

You can read it free on this site

Wallaroo · 12/11/2008 16:37

Can't get it to load skinnygirl - wonder if it's been taken off as it's selling so well or maybe it's just me!

I inherited a school cookery book from my Grandma that does this exact same thing in a 1912 sort of way - the chapter is called "A Week's Dinners for the Home". The steamed pudding recipes in particular are excellent. But generally you have to be a big fan of beef to survive on the 1912 diet.

I can hand wash, starch and iron a sailor suit collar as well thanks to that book, if anyone has one that needs doing, and also retrim a straw hat.

ohdearwhatamess · 12/11/2008 17:21

My copy came today. After a cursory read, I'm quite impressed. It is full of ideas for things I might cook the dcs (even though only ds2 will eat them), if not stuff I'd do for dh and I. They'll be trying the veggie burgers very shortly.

She has an entertaining writing style, and I'll eat my hat if she isn't a MNer. Her style and views read very much like various threads on here.

skinnygirlNOT · 12/11/2008 17:27

I can't believe it- it's gone!

First read about it on MSE yesterday then logged on to mumsnet and couldn't believe there was a thread about the book here too.

Probably wanted to make more sales!

Should have saved some recipes yesterday

BirdyArms · 12/12/2008 20:16

I bought the book. I liked the writing style and thought that it was full of common sense but ultimately didn't think that the recipes were as good as the ones that I already use/ have. It's a good book for someone who would like to cook more and needs some basic unchallenging recipes but not for the experienced cook. Have given my copy to SIL for Christmas, I think she'll love it.
