i bought this for a friend today who hadn't read it and I have been thinking about it all day.

Isn't it wonderful - the notion and portrayal of friendship and the bitter sweetness.

ahh!

Yes, it is a fantastic book. I love the sentimentality that Steinbeck is always critised for.

I remember it from schooldays. Much better than The Red Pony which we also read.

God this was one of our GCSE books, I hated it, but maybe because I was forced to read and dissect it etc.

I teach this every year at least once, often twice - and it still makes me cry.

Other than the silly bit with the giant rabbit, I believe it is one of the finest books ever written.

I re-discovered it a couple of years ago.
I did it for GCSE and thought it was good but ... well, it's the endless analysis that got me down.
Ironically, I re-read it when I was tutoring a girl through her GCSEs and I really enjoyed it.
It made me cry much more this time!
