I'm really in the mood for reading something with a dashing and sexy leading man in it, any suggestions?

From books I've read the ones that spring to mind are:

  • Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (obviously!)
  • Rett Butler in Gone With The Wind
  • George Emerson in A Room With A View
  • Mark Darcy in Briget Jones' Diary
  • Luke Costello in Rachel's Holiday
  • Morello in the Stephanie Plum series

I don't mind what sort of book it is, chick-lit would be fine, would prefer not a classic at the mo, but am open to all suggestions!

My imagination is working overtime just contemplating the size of your shower!

MiaWallace · 05/10/2008 08:17

lol slayerette, that was my first thought too.

Sidge · 05/10/2008 11:21

LOL heck if we're slippery enough I'm sure we'd all fit in

wheresthehamster · 05/10/2008 15:13

OK. I'm prepared to do a three-way split on Reacher as long as I can have Myron Bolitar all to myself on Mondays and Thursdays.

Myron (for the uninitiated) is a funny handsome 'detective' with a gooey soft centre (lives with mum and dad), and seems to always find trouble. Books written by Harlen Coben with some good one-liners.

janeite · 05/10/2008 17:37

Ok - you have all convinced me that I need to read "Twilight" - would my 13 year old dd like it too, do you think?

NotElizabethBennet · 05/10/2008 17:41

Thanks everyone!
I kept checking back on the thread thinking "does no-one else fancy characters in books? is it just me???" - glad to see I'm not the only one!

I'm currently re-reading Rachel's Holiday for the umpteenth time and really, Luke Costello is one of the sexiest literary men I think I've ever read. I thought everything she did after this was not so good, but has anyone read anything new by her?

Forgot about Heathcliff - yes, of course he's on the list too

Thanks for all the suggestions - do keep them coming if you have any more - and I'm going to start putting all of the titles mentioned in my trolley on amazon.

I have recently read This Charming Man and it wasn't one of her best, tbh - multiple narrators, one of whom had a really annoying faux-Bridget Jones style. Rachel's Holiday is my absolute favourite by a mile - not just because of Luke Costello - I love her slow realisation in rehab of her problem and why she's there. I think the scene where Luke and the flatmate come to the counselling session is brilliantly done.

slayerette · 05/10/2008 17:46

If you haven't read Anybody Out There, I do recommend that one - but you'll need a box of tissues

MiaWallace · 05/10/2008 19:56

I'm sure your dd would love it janeite. Think she maybe a bit disappointed with regular pimpled teenagers after reading about Edward Cullen though

procrastinatingparent · 05/10/2008 20:20

A big vote here for Georgette Heyer - there was a great thread on her a while ago. She writes great leading men, and very funny stories too.

Jack Reacher. A fairly recent discovery here and about as far from Georgette Heyer as you can get, but what a man.

janeite · 05/10/2008 20:32

Lol - Thanks Mia. She's at a girls school, so knows very few pimpled youths right now!

Will do an Amazon order methinks.

Liffey · 05/10/2008 20:33

I've also read Rachel's HOliday more than once. It's so much more than the book it is generally credited to be. I think the copy I read had a pair of jewelled flip-flops on the front!!!

The first time I read it I just found it a cracking page-turner and very funny. But I read it again after my own life had crumbled. I guess because the author 'rebuilt' her own life, the book felt like a friend helping you back on to your feet..

MiaWallace · 05/10/2008 21:03

janeite, it will send her hormones racing but if she has little chance of meeting any teenage male vampires I'm sure she'll be fine.

Flamebat · 06/10/2008 22:25

Has to be Twilight

slayerette · 06/10/2008 22:32

all obsessed with Edward Cullen? Really??

I'll stick with Morelli and Ranger, thanks!

Flamebat · 06/10/2008 22:35

That is NOT Edward Cullen!

Horrible casting

MiaWallace · 07/10/2008 08:01

I agree with Flamebat. That's not 'my' Edward.

slayerette · 07/10/2008 13:29

Isn't it awful when a book you love is turned into a film and the casting is just so wrong?

On the other hand, I love the story that Bernard Cornwell tells - his original description of the character Richard Sharpe was nothing like Sean Bean - but Cornwell loved Bean's portrayal of the character so much that he now pictures Bean and hears his voice in his head when he's writing Sharpe!

MiaWallace · 07/10/2008 18:06

Wow that must make Sean Bean feel proud of his performance

nix66 · 21/10/2008 13:13

Roarke... has he been mentioned.... (J.D. Robb In Death Series)??

Am a lurker who loves books and for my sins have just reserved Twilight from my local library thanks to you lot!

UPDATE

Just wanted to let you all know how I was getting on with the Leading Men

Well, I started Killing Floor by Lee Child, and while I thought the story was not bad, and the character of Jack Reacher was interesting, I could not bear the writing AT ALL. It got to the point where I felt that if the sentences got any shorter or simpler, I was going to start shooting people myself

So I gave up. I don't generally read crime or thrillers, so maybe that was the problem.

However, I next moved onto Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, which again is not my type of book at all (I just do not do romantic historical fiction), and I must say, I am about 2/3 of the way through and LOVING it!! It's fabulous! And has been such a perfect read over the holidays, total escapism.

And Jamie Fraser...oh yes

So what I now need to know is - should I order the next one in the series, or will I be disappointed? Haven't finished this one yet, but would like to have the next one ready when I do (if it's worth reading).
