The book thief, markus zusak

Notes from an exhibition

The blind assasin - Margaret Atwood

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/09/2008 17:21

Second - notes on an exhibition and the book thief, we are choosing ours tonight, and have just read Any Human Heary by William Boyd which was briliant, he also wrote Restless also very good and one that we read on here and all enjoyed was Agent Zigzag.

mummydoc · 24/09/2008 17:23

just finished a book called "monster love" it is certainly gripping if painful - it is about co-denpendcy between sociopaths and does involve rahter unpleasant bits of chid abuse - if you can read we need to talk about kevin you could read this about the same levle of unpleasantness if you know what i mean, it is short so quick to read and left me longing to belong ot a book club so i could discuss it with someone - sorry at work and cannot remember the author.

Salleroo · 24/09/2008 17:23

Random acts of heroic love - amazing story. A little sad though.

rosmerta · 24/09/2008 17:39

We've read Notes on a Scandal which generated a lot of discussion, also Half of a Yellow Sun which is very good though a bit upsetting.

JacobImprintedOnMENotNessie · 24/09/2008 17:40

Twilight!!!!!

Page turner, then just talk about Edward

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/09/2008 17:40

Sorry any human Heart

Takver · 24/09/2008 18:07

The Dispossessed - great story (would be classed as sci-fi, but don't be put off by that, no spaceships or aliens!), real page turner, and loads to talk about as it is a 'utopia' novel imagining what a totally different sort of society would be like.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 24/09/2008 18:33

the spare room
although about cancer, but witty at the same time

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 24/09/2008 18:35

actually, not so much witty, but makes you laugh in places

yeahyeah · 24/09/2008 18:36

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston really blew me away, I always think that's what I'd pick in a book group. She should be much more famous than she is...Black American writer from the South...the book is almost transcendental in places...really beautiful and moving.

tammybear · 24/09/2008 18:36

Agree with Twilight.

And JacobImprintedOnMENotNessie I LOVE your name hehe.

travellingwilbury · 24/09/2008 18:40

If you liked the Kite Runner then I would really recommend A thousand splendid suns by the same author . It is set in Afganhistan again but written from the female perspective of growing up there .

I really enjoyed it

The Book Thief is also one we have done and I loved that as well .

squilly · 24/09/2008 19:41

I thought Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell was a fabulous book and would be good to discuss as it's litle off-centre.

Not your usual booky book, but well written and different.

AbbeyA · 24/09/2008 19:45

Cloud Atlas gives plenty to discuss-I actually preferred his Black Swan Green.
Notes on an Exhibition is a very good one to do- Patrick Gale.

MorocconOil · 24/09/2008 19:47

Another vote for Notes on An Exhibition

janeite · 24/09/2008 19:47

I really liked "The Book Thief". I've just read "Oryx And Crake" by Margaret Atwood, which I think could generate a lot of discussion, as could "The Handmaid's Tale".

If you've already done "The Kite Runner" then personally I wouldn't choose "A Thousand Splendid Suns" as they may be a bit samey - I was very disappointed with the latter.

"Notes On An exhibition" is interesting.

nickytwotimes · 24/09/2008 19:51

I'm a massive Jonathan Coe fan.
All his books are page turners but he manages to combine that with depth. Smart arse, lol!
'The Rotters Club' is my favourite.

nickytwotimes · 24/09/2008 19:52

Oh, Ali Smith is farking amazing too. 'Hotel World'

eekamoose · 24/09/2008 19:52

Hawkesmoor by Peter Ackroyd
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien

Just listing my two favourite books here, really. Perfectly good for a book group (not too long) - oldies but goodies .

MrsCurly · 24/09/2008 19:55

Have just read Lionel Shriver's The Post Birthday World which was a great read

MiaWallace · 24/09/2008 20:00

Another vote for the book thief

Bubbaluv · 24/09/2008 20:01

Cloud Street by Tim Winton.

georgimama · 24/09/2008 20:02

Notes on a Scandal is brilliant, and quite chilling.

Why not a classic - The Great Gatsby or The Catcher in the Rye? Both quite short and very readable.
