I am a great fan of TP, but since having children I have not been able to keep up with his work.

Is Nation a discworld novel?

I know he has been diagnosed with a form of dementia and I belive he now has help with his writing.

How ong ago was this book written? And is it co-written?

Would be interested to know.

SmugColditz · 19/09/2008 08:27

I think you can feel the fear.

A big theme in that book is loneliness and death, and leaving one's loved ones behind.

belgo · 19/09/2008 08:27

Is this another Discworld novel? I haven't heard of it. I don't think he's has a co-writer - the type of Alzheimer's he has is an unusual type that isn't causing him to have dementia, it effects his brain- muscles co-ordination instead, as far as I understand it. Apparently he doesn't have any difficulty thinking up the plots and story lines, but does have a problem with typing.

pigleto · 19/09/2008 08:33

It's not discworld.

AnathemaDevice · 19/09/2008 23:37

Is it out yet? Hmm, I get paid next week... It's his first non-Discworld, non part of a series book in about 20 years, I think. Sounds interesting. Just hope it's better than Making Money, which, I thought, was the weakest of all the Discworld books. The next Discworld book will also be about Moist Von-boring-character,unfortunately. I think there's another Tiffany Aching book out soon too.

It is a children's book though, avenanap. It's in Tesco's at about £8.99 I think

edam · 19/09/2008 23:58

Can someone please read the damn book and then post an update? Am a Discworld addict so don't want to buy this in case it's disappointing.

Have just invested in his guide to folk tales which is looking good so far.

avenanap · 20/09/2008 00:15

Thanks. ds is reading it, he's half way through so I'll ask him about it and report back to you tomorrow afternoon.

SmugColditz · 20/09/2008 00:22

I've read it!

I found the first half quite quite heart breaking (although had pmt)

edam · 20/09/2008 13:59

Would you recommend it to someone who loves Discworld?

stitch · 04/10/2008 21:21

its not a discworld book. once you get over that, its actually av ery good book. but i don think it is a childrens book. the first part ofit is just tooo heartbreaking.
but more childrens book than his dark materials.

I really liked it but no its not his usual style at all.

I cried buckets at the end - but liked it so much it only took me two days to read.

I agree with smugcolditz it is a really dark book for tp and has less comedic moments than his discworld novels. However I think it is a book he has written from the heart and one I think he has really wanted to write for a long time and is not just a rehash of familiar themes in a discworld novel.

Going Postal and making Money where both fairly similar - following an almost set discworld pattern. This was something deeper more akin to Thud or Monstrous Regiment.

Anyway I really liked it - thought it was brilliant in fact. I hope he has time to produce more like this.
