MC Beaton Agatha Raisin (love love love but its sooo bad)
James Herriott

i'm sure i have more but need to go and inspect my bottom shelf.

Sidney Sheldon! Have all his early ones and they're fabulous trash.

Also love Jilly Cooper.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/09/2008 12:15

Joanna Trollope (but not for several years)

LouMacca · 18/09/2008 12:17

Jeffrey Archer

Sorry but Kane and Able was really good!

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 12:19

I read an ancient Jilly Cooper on holiday - it was on the bookshelf.

It had a picture of Jilly on the front in massive glasses.

God it was shite. I couldn't put it down

orangina · 18/09/2008 12:32

Very fond of the original Jilly Cooper books (Imogen, Octavia, Bella), and still enjoy reading the original Malory Towers series (why? God knows.... sentimentality I guess!)

angrypixie · 18/09/2008 13:05

Now if we are going down the guilty nostalgia route I have been known to re read;
Malory Towers
Twins at St Clares
The original Jilly Coopers
Jackie Collins (the 'Lucky' period)
and.......
Flowers in the Attic!

This post will self destruct in 30 seconds (I hope)

MrsJoshLyman · 18/09/2008 13:20

Another Jilly Cooper lover here... I've leant out a few of her books and I'm too embarassed to ask for them back.

orangina · 18/09/2008 14:41

omg, flowers in the attic, what a blast from the past...

(hasn't self destructed yet !)

angrypixie · 18/09/2008 14:50

DAMN! Should have named changed......oh the shame of it!

cheapskatemum · 21/09/2008 22:58

Loumacca you & me both - Jeffrey Archer!!! Like others, picked one up on holiday (it was DH's) when I'd run out of reading matter. Think my favourite probably First Among Equals.

MorrisZapp · 07/10/2008 11:55

James Herriot is a guilty pleasure??? Come come, surely not!

I proudly and openly re-read the entire lot every year and I never tire of them. They are simply wonderful comfort reading, and handy too, as I am now a fully qualified vet from reading about how to help a spoilt Pekinese lose weight

I've actually ordered the biography of James Herriot (real name Alf Wight, what a disappointment) from Amazon - it's written by his son, who also became a vet.

Did you know that he almost had a nervous breakdown due to the threat of legal action from his partner, who took offence to being portrayed badly in the books? ie the Siegfried character.

Don't know why he was so upset myself, I thought he sounded like a thoroughly decent chap. I'll read the bio and come back on this.

VintageGardenia · 07/10/2008 11:57

God how can I admit this?

Last night at Tesco (what was I even doing there at 8.30? Buying DS a calculator) I popped Wendy Holden's Filthy Rich into the basket.

funnypeculiar · 07/10/2008 11:57

Georgette Heyer ... although I think Steven Fry also likes them so I feel somewhat vindicated.

MorrisZapp · 07/10/2008 11:58

But yes, Jilly Cooper, marvellous stuff. So much better that modern chick lit.

I was very let down though when I read 'Valley of the Dolls', which was apparently the first bonkbuster and an absolute classic. I thought it was total pish, and not even bad in a good way. Just bad.

MorrisZapp · 07/10/2008 12:01

India Knight never shuts up gushing about Georgette Heyer, and she's proper posh and clever.

You'll have to think of something trashier than that

Actually, does Les Dennis's autobiography count? I picked it up for a laff in the airport and was absolutely hooked after one page. Read two chapters before my flight was called!

Think I'll wait until it turns up in charity shops before parting with actual cash though.
