I've wanted to read this for ages & finally found it in the library last week.

However,it was quite disappointing really-it seemed very bland, shallow and unexciting, which was odd, considering the subject matter.

Apparently the book increased tourism to Savannah by a huge amount,so obviously other people must have enjoyed it.Perhaps it is just me being unappreciative-

Oooh, love Richard Ford. Was disappointed by the long awaited book #2 by Donna Tartt... couldn't fnish it, was BORED by it, too self indulgent. Also, just didn't get Atonement, despite loving all the rest of McEwans books....

orangina · 18/09/2008 10:59

Enjoyed Midnight in the garden.... though

MrsBates · 18/09/2008 11:00

Likewise Donna Tartt 2 although loved first one. Glad to meet a woman who loves Richard Ford - maybe I should give him another chance.

Independence Day and The Sportswriter. Both a bit dark, but v East Coast (reminded me a bit of whatever that bloke was that wrote the Rabbit books.... augh, where is my brain?!)

Am looking forward to Zoe Heller's new book (just out now, reviewed in last w/e papers...)

orangina · 18/09/2008 11:05

John Updike (had to do "Rabbit" search on amazon... duh)

FiveGoMadInDorset · 18/09/2008 11:46

We need to talk about Kevin - got bored and irritated halfway through rad the end and that was it.

SixSpotBurnet · 18/09/2008 11:54

I very disliked The Time Traveller's Wife.

CountessDracula · 18/09/2008 11:56

Agree Captain Corelli's Mandolin I just didn't like it at all

And Cloud Atlas

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 12:01

The Post Birthday World - total bolleux.

The Time Traveller's Wife - gave it about 15 minutes, got fed up with flicking back and forth, trying to make sense of it.

Case Histories - I just kind of lost heart as it petered out...

Cloud Atlas - yaaawn.

Am getting increasingly hard to engage.

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 12:02

Chesil Beach - liked what there was, but where was the rest of it?

mumof2222222222222222boys · 18/09/2008 12:09

I have just finished the Time Traveller. What a struggle. 2nd half better, but not entirely sure I got it. Captain Correlli I did enjoy, some time ago, but again it was a huge struggle to get through the first 100 pages.

OrmIrian · 18/09/2008 12:12

Time travellers poxy wife! It actually still makes me cross now.

Five people you meet in heaven.

Book of laughter and forgetting....well I confess I didn't laugh and I've forgotten most of it.

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 12:21

Unbearable Lightness of Being - pretentious twaddle. Shouldn't have missed the massive clue in the name, should I?

Atonement - hated the book, liked the film.

Anything by Jodi Picoult - what do people see in her?

OrmIrian · 18/09/2008 12:22

I was the other way round with Atonement bobbie, but I think I've developed a Keira-Knightley intolerance.

orangina · 18/09/2008 12:26

I keep looking at Cloud Atlas, but can't bring myself to pick it up (not tempting enough).

Also, found London Fields just meh. Kept thinking it was all going somewhere, and then...

it didn't.

Bobbiewickham · 18/09/2008 12:28

Agree, re: Keira usually, but I liked her in that.

Well, she looked good in the clothes, anyway, which is about as much as you can ask from Keira.

I liked the depiction of the era and the cinematography.

SummerLightning · 18/09/2008 12:35

Yes - The Lovely Bones, hated it, I read to about five pages before the end and put it down
Also We need to talk about kevin, just depressing and irritating.
And Rebecca, it was ok, but was expecting to love it.
Currently reading William Boyd, Any Human Heart, a friend told me it was his favourite book - I am worried for him now, as I think it's fairly dull and the main character is totally despicable! Why does he like it?

Spatz · 18/09/2008 12:44

Also hated Captain Corelli - glad there are others like me out there!

MrsMuddle · 18/09/2008 14:47

I am such a mumsnet cliche! I also hated Captain Corelli, Cloud Atlas & Lovely Bones (as well as TTW, which I posted about earlier)!

MrsBates · 18/09/2008 15:58

Think time to read is so rare and precious now I expect a lot from a book I and am more impatient when it's not delivering. I am much more likely to give up whereas in the old days I had a 'I've started so I'll finish' attitude. Now life is too full of other things to waste time on a book I'm not enjoying.
