The End of Mr Y - Has anyone read it? Should it have blackened edges to the page?

I got this from a boot on Sunday along with 20 beautiful quality, great books for 50p each, and I've started reading it, but I just wondered...what do people think of this?

Philip Pullman says it's good and I wouldn't want to argue with that guy.

There's an inky blackness to the pages and it looks like it should be there, but should it?? It's like someone's dipped it in indigo coloured ink and let the page edges soak it in. It's a lovely effect when you're at the beginning of the book as the pages have slight bleeds of ink, but I'm thinking now, perhaps someone has done this to the book. Weird, but true!

So what's the verdict? Good book? Bad? Inky or no??

yes the inky edges should be there

I read it compulsively from start to finish in a very short space of time, enjoyed it hugely, but have to admit it lost me ever so slightly right at the very end

Lauriefairycake · 15/07/2008 16:41

it should be, for god's sake don't take it in the bath and get it moist like I did - that black stuff does not come off (even with said bathwater)

It's good so far, have only read the first 3 chapters and very at you getting it cheap cos i paid full price only 3 weeks ago

I nearly bought it full price in the shop last week, but figured I had enough reading material to keep me happy for months and reminded myself of the credit crunch.

I'm enjoying first few pages, but the ink question kept popping into my head. Now that's sorted, I can enjoy my book.

Sorry about the 50p comment. You should see some of the other books I got too...most of them were shortlisted for various literary prizes and all were in mint condition. I would have bought everything she had, but DH has threatened to divorce me if I bring in more books than we have book shelves...and this last lot completely filled in the gaps on my 8 shelf unit! The divorce courts are beckoning

I dropped mine in the bath too! Inky edges now look v.interesting.

Loved the book, must get myself to some boot sales for book bargains, spend a fortune on books.

I thought it was fantastic. Really compulsive reading. I got lost on some of the more philosophical sciency stuff but it made me want to find out more.

I think Scarlett Thomas is fab. I also loved PopCo. Not sure she's particularly brilliant with endings tbh, but the rest of the book mostly makes up.

I'm about half way through now and am loving it..

Oh this is a great book.
I loved the way it looked too.
Thanks for reminding me, I must read some more of her stuff.

I got this as a £2.99 read from the Times. I enjoyed it although I think a true scientist would find it hard to take. Personally I thought it lost it a bit at the end but definitely worth 50p!

V jealous at cheapo books. The black pages look lovely, don't they? I didn't think much to the book though - I thought it had great potential but never quite delivered and was just too "clever" for its own good in places. There were quite a few paragraphs throughout the book of really, really good quality writing I thought but it wasn't sustained.

CoteDAzur · 04/10/2008 09:07

I enjoyed it. But....

What happened at the end? Are they now the Adam and Eve of another world/dimension?

BeckyBendyLegs · 04/10/2008 12:56

I loved it. I suggest you read 'Popco' as well by the same author if you liked this one.

Troutpout · 04/10/2008 12:59

i was a bit disappointed in it tbh.

CoteDAzur · 04/10/2008 21:12

Yes, but what on earth happened in the end?
