Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series...

It's still as magical and relevant today, 50 years later..

What's yours?

There’s one from the 50s that’s out of print called The Three Elizabeths, I’d love to read that again.

Is this the one ?

No luck on World of Books site, but it’s currently up for sale on E bay.

Was Mandy the one about the girl who created a garden? I can remember the cover of that library book so well.
101 Dalmatians is such a wonderful book- a real adventure story.
I still reread the Moomin books and the Little House series.

She was an orphan in an orphanage and found a seemingly abandoned cottage in the woods and made it her home. Written by Julie Andrews.

What was this about? The title doesn’t ring any bells but I remember that cover.

Tallisker · 12/10/2026 19:28

Oh Moomins! How could I have forgotten those?
Also Mallory Towers
Follyfoot Farm
Gobbolino The Witch’s Cat

Quartzfairy · 12/10/2026 19:28

I’ve just reread the Trebizon series. I also go back to early Jacqueline Wilson books and Judy Blume.

Loved reading Judy Blume. The first one I read was Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

So many favourites already mentioned!

I would add the Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart and the Flambards series by KM Peyton. In fact anything by KM Peyton (particularly the Patrick Pennington series - but they were aimed at teenagers I guess).

The Ghost of Thomas Kempe by Penelope Lively also springs to mind. And A Dog So Small by Philippa Pearce.

It’s a Scottish novel about: cousins who are all called Elizabeth Graham. They get displaced from their comfortable middle class life and school and have to move to a pokey wee house (to them, sounded palatial to 10 year old me) and go to a local school with the local plebs.

I read it countless times growing up, it was my comfort book, usually with a huge cheese piece and a cocoa.

The dark is rising too, also love rereading swallows and amazons series

I was so impressed when I read swallows and amazons with my kids, years after I’d last read it for myself. I was expecting it to feel like it had aged somehow, to be more old fashioned, a little tricky to access - it was just so brilliant, so clear, well written, just as good as it ever was if not better.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 12/10/2026 20:05

I used to devour any Eva Ibbotson book that I could get my hands on, and any boarding school book. It seemed so exotic in comparison to state schools and having to come home and put up with my sibling!

Roald Dahl's Matilda, C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Hilary McKay's Saffy's Angel, Ballet Shoes (as mentioned upthread) and an edition of A Christmas Carol that I still have. I read a LOT as a child, so I'd have to think up more and report back!

Edited to add Elisabeth Beresford's The Wombles. I loved those!

I adore The Wild Hunt of Hagworthy!

Also The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, though I have to skip the escape from Fundindelve because it makes me so claustrophobic.

The Little House books, LM Montgomery’s Emily books, which I prefer to the Anne ones, Michelle Magorian’s Back Home, the My Friend Flicka books, anything by Noel Streatfield, but my favourite is The Circus is Coming, Arthur Ransome, Angela Brazil, Monica Dicken’s Follyfoot books, the What Katy Did books, Little Women and its sequels.

But my favourites are Antonia Forest,

You've named two of my favourites:
Mandy ( I read and reread and reread that until it fell apart.
Gobbolino the Witches Cat. Read it to my own children.

A little Princess ( Frances Hodgson Burnett)

The Secret Garden ( F HB)

Ballet Shoes for Anna (Noel Streatfeild)

The Growing Summer ( N Str)

A Vicarage Family ( because I was from one and it was spookily familiar) (N Str)

Miss Happiness and Miss Flower Rumor Godden)

My Darling Villain ( as a teenager) ( Lynne Reid Banks)

All the "William" books ( Richmal Crompton)

Have you seen the Chalet School thread?

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 12/10/2026 20:26

I love the Winnie the Pooh books and Narnia and have just finished a full read through of the 58 Chalet School books.

Ballet Shoes is still wonderful.

I thought I’d feel the same about Thursdays Chiid but it just annoyed me. Margaret’s benefactor was never revealed nor the reason why they suddenly stopped supporting her from afar and how convenient the Beresfords were actually rich poshoes….

Have you seen the NT production of Ballet Shoes? I believe it is touring next year if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.

Globules · 12/10/2026 20:27

When I started teaching, I took as many opportunities to read my top 3 to my classes.

A necklace of raindrops
Where the wild things are
The magic faraway tree

I was an adult when HP came out. I'm currently re-reading the series for the umpteenth time.

MrsTrellisOgleddCymru · 12/10/2026 20:27

Little Women, Black Beauty, The Secret Garden, Toms Midnight Garden, Charlottes Web, Ballet Shoes. So many wonderful 'children's' books which I still re-read.

Tallisker · 12/10/2026 20:27

Oh yes @Oneearringlost The Little Princess!
