Book club tonight - can anyone tell me what happens in the Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox?

Hi, did manage to finish it but in a bit of a rush and so not entirely sure what happened at the end? Can anyone help me? Oh, and were the betrayals the blazer and saying that she had been doing odd things? Did Kitty take Esme's baby as her own and if so who was it? Why did Kittys husband reject her? Think I need to reread it but not enough time before I go out!! Thanks

Kitty did take Esme's baby. He was Iris's father. Our group thought Kitty's husband was unknowlegable in the ways of love, and simply disinterested, rather than anything more sinister. It was certainly strange how he accepted that his wife had 'had a child' though.
An extremely sad tale.

good book, that

Oh god - I read this and I can't remember at all what happened! It must have made an impression on me....

Slubberdegullion · 27/06/2008 19:27

Oh we did this one ages ago.

All I can remember was
1)it was sad
2)the author didn't use paragraphs
3)didn't Esme kill her sister at the end?

Springflower · 27/06/2008 19:27

Thanks for that ChippyMinton - I thought she had taken the baby but couldnt quite understand how the husband wouldnt realise! I had thought that Alex was going to end up being related to Iris which is what confused me about whose baby the dad ended up being. Can you help a bit more please?! What happened at the end - did Esme do something to Kitty or the opposite way round? Thanks a lot!

Esme killed Kitty at the old people's home. Left ambiguous if anyone but Iris realised she had been killed rather than died naturally.

ChippyMinton · 27/06/2008 19:31

Esme stuck a pillow over her sister's face IIRC, while Iris waited outside. Revenge. We were left wondering whether she would get away with it, or perhaps it was partly her intention to return to the only life she knew ie incarceration

Ok- thanks. Think I know enough to go and not completely embarrass myself!

I really enjoyed the book - terrifying to realise it was based on so many very real tragedies, though.

ask questions instead and look really smart!
