I thought it was a great read. I love the way he writes. The opposite of unecessary poncing, just good writing.

Read it last year and loved it. Set me off on a quest to read other wartime thrillers!

Completely agree - have you tried Any Human Heart? Don't know why he isn't up there with the Sebastian Faulkeses and Ian McEwans.

northernrefugee39 · 26/06/2008 19:35

Any human heart- yes , I love him as a writer....The Blue afternoon is slightly different from the others I've read, but also great, and The New Confessions.
I absolutely agree lala, I think he's very under rated. I like the solid consise way he writes, which I should think is quite hard to do. It's not usually something i'd immediately go for, but I'm hooked on his writing.

Any Human Heart is my favourite book of all time. He is really underrated IMO.

Brazzaville Beach is also great

Love The New Confessions

Must look at Restless

What was the name of the one with the green cover, and maybe a man wearing a bowler hat on the front? (Good description, heh?) Well , I wasn't too keen on that. Just remembered - Armadillo

northernrefugee39 · 26/06/2008 19:59

Spice, I loved Any Human Heart, it's so broad, and I really like the map of interlinking history and his own personal journal.

Haven't read Armadillo or Iceceam Wars...

I love William Boyd, and agree with all the previous posters. Another great WB book is A Good Man In Africa.

I've heard him talk at abook festival, and he seems like a genuinely nice man - modest and humerous, too.

Oh, and Brazzeville Beach....

The only thing I do which irritates me when I try and remember them is muddle up Any Human Heart with TNC... TNC is about the film maker?

TNC is about the film maker, iirc
My favourite

Have also read it, not especially impressed. It reads quite well, fairly gripping in parts, but once I'd come to the end I found that sizeable chunks of the book had no relevance to the overall plot!
Was ok to pass the time, though!

TuttiFrutti · 27/06/2008 18:27

I love ALL his books, and Restless was one of my favourites. Unputdownable IMO.

AbbeyA · 27/06/2008 18:29

I really enjoyed it -I must try some of the others that people have mentioned.

McDreamy · 27/06/2008 18:30

It's one of my bedside must read books. I am going on a pamper day tomorrow so I might take it with me!

northernrefugee39 · 27/06/2008 21:11

MumtoPhoebe, which bits did you think weren't relevent to the plot? The daughter's relationships and the German couple? I thought they were quite a good juxtaposition of a modern day what could happen sort of thing.... the demos, the not quite knowing, the bader meinhoff (spelling?) connection, the policeman asking he questions and her quite willig to give up to him.... leading to something or nothing, in the same way the mother mut ahve always had that feeling.

Tutti, yes, I think The Blue Afternoon and Restless are my favourites.
