Looking for a new author to love!

Hi there, I love reading and usually get through a book or two a week. I love chick fic and a smattering of crime fiction and historical fiction.
I do feel that I’ve “run out of authors” though! I’m not keen on American or a lot of international fiction so have, rather obviously, limited myself a bit. I seem to spend all my time now re-reading my favourites that include - I absolute love/d Elly Griffiths, Marian Keyes, Jane Green, Joanna Trollope, Erica James, Alison Weir, Elizabeth Jane Howard, Rowan Coleman, Sinead Moriarty, Katie Fforde, Maggie O’Farrell, Libby Purves, Prue Leith, Elizabeth Buchan, Beth o’Leary, Matt Haig, Mike Gayle, Catherine Alliott, Adam Kay, Jane Fallon, Jo-Jo Moyes, Liane Moriarty, Dorothy Koomson, Adele Parks, Celia Ahern, etc. I find Jill Mansell, Fiona Gibson, Shari Low a bit too light for me and am currently trying Jane Casey but it’s not grabbing me.
Any recommendations will be really gratefully received! BTW I’m 56 and love a series of books.

Have you tried Cora Harrison? A nice mix of “who dunnit” and historical background. I have loved her series where the clever detective is a Reverend Mother nun in an Irish convent during the 1020s.

@Sminty2 Thank you so much for The Authenticity Project recommendation, perfect read for the subbed and a new author for me.

New author for me too and it was recommended in a World of Books email as a great summer read. They were right 😊

Conchiglie · 23/06/2026 21:13

OP I think you would like Sarah Moss - try Ripeness (her latest).

fruitypancake · 23/06/2026 21:16

Kristin Hannah
Lucy Clarke

Aftertheharvest · 24/06/2026 14:55

seconding the MW Craven and Sarah Moss recommendations

5foot5 · 25/06/2026 17:34

Have you tried any Trisha Ashley? She has written loads - jump in anywhere. I love Good Husband Material.

For historical and uplifting the AJ Pearce series starting with Dear Mrs Bird is very good.

So is Lissa Evans

Ruth Ware writes very good thrillers.

Also take a look at Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is sort of unclassifiable but I think everyone should read it. In a similar vein, O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker.

If you've never read any Nancy Mitford, they are v funny and set in the past.

Alouest · 25/06/2026 19:28

And Sophie Hannah! Psychological thrillers.

Ilovemyshed · 25/06/2026 19:34

Try LJ Ross for the crime and also Val McDermaid and Cynthia Harrod Eagles.

For chick lit - classic Shirley Conran Lace and also Barbara Taylor Bradford Woman of Substance series

Loopylalalou · 25/06/2026 20:03

Bob Mortimer - The Satsuma Complex, The Hotel Avocado and I’m just about the read the recently published The Long Shoe. Brilliant!

KnittyKnotty · 26/06/2026 19:54

Lesley Pearse, especially the older ones. I'm genuinely slightly envious of people who haven't read them yet!

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 26/06/2026 19:59

Work your way through Margaret Atwood.

HelenaWilson · 26/06/2026 20:05

Also take a look at Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis.

Connie Willis who had her characters sheltering from the Blitz in the Jubilee Line.
If you want time travel, then Jodi Taylor is the author to go for.

Alouest · 27/06/2026 08:01

They are great books regardless. Jodi Taylor is fun but much more lightweight. Plus it doesn't sound like OP is particularly interested in sci fi so I'm recommending those two in particular of the Connie Willis books because I know quite a few sci fi haters who loved them.

For historical fiction have you tried any of Laurie Graham's books? Not everything she has written has a historical setting but the following do:

  • The Importance of Being Kennedy
  • Gone With the Windsors
  • The Future Homemakers of America
  • A Humble Companion
  • The Liar's Daughter
  • The Grand Duchess of Nowhere
  • The Night in Question

I think she is an exceptional writer and love almost everything she has done. Her later, Dr Dan, books are maybe not so good, however.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/06/2026 17:00

Karen Swann? Barbara Erskine?

BG2015 · 04/07/2026 20:34

My favourite authors are

Robert Grainger - Detective books about a very quirky policeman called DC Smith
Elly Griffiths
Lisa Jewell
Dorothy Koomson
Mike Gayle
Laura Pearson
Clare Chambers
Stacey Halls

These are the authors I regularly wait for new publications to be released.
