To get me out of a slump. I was flying through books then got to my current read and my god I am struggling. So i thought I would take a break with a nice quick read to get me going again.

Rosemary’s Baby- quite short and picks up midway nicely. Also an unusual genre.

May not be your cup of tea but the Hunger Games is quite fast paced. I don't normally read young adult fiction but I enjoyed it and it was a good read. The author worked in TV and you can tell as it has a very visual quality about it.

Lots of 'airport' junk fiction fits that bill - easy reading and pacey but not great literature - Lucy Foley's early work like the Hunt, The Blue Hour by Paula Hawkins is also a speed read page turner but neither of them are short.

The Push by Audrey Audrain. Short chapters and pacey

Lisa Jewell? Gillian McAllister?

Murderbot Diaries. They're excellent.

Catcher in the Rye. Dh hates it but I love it for insight into the unravelling mind of a teen over a couple of days.

The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin. It's set over 2 days and nights and only about 200 pages, but packs a lot in.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/06/2026 18:10

American Dirt, looks longer than you are looking for but totally compelling

mixingplaydoh · 09/06/2026 18:20

Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton

This thread has reminded me of The Day of the Locust (1939 novel set in Hollywood) by American author Nathanael West which I haven't thought of for ages. That's short, a quick read, a classic and quite crazily compulsive. I must re-read it.
