Welcome to the second thread of the Les Miserables Read-a-long.

I've taken over from AgualusasL0ver in trying to keep us all reading together, but have copied the below over from the first thread.

I'll also be using the Christine Donougher translation (on Kindle) for posting in the main, but it doesn't matter which translation you have, they seem to follow the same breakdown.
It's a bit sprawly in places, some people have entire sections in the appendices, so I've started adding the first line of the chapter to try and lock in exactly where we are for that day, hopefully it helps us all keep together!

The only rules
The plan is to read ONE chapter a day and contribute/follow the thread as you see fit. There are c. 365 chapters, so we plan to take the year to read slowly and really get under the skin. Sometimes we have clustered chapters in past read-a-longs, and people do sometimes read ahead. All fine - but No spoilers until the relevant day.
Notes from previous read-a-longs

  • How you manage one a day is entirely up to you, some people prefer to store them and read all the chapters for the week at once, some read each day.
  • Sometimes these books can go off on a tangent all their own (looking at Mr Tolstoy), stick with it :-)
  • All formats and translations welcome. Sometimes the translation discussions are some of the most interesting conversations.
  • You WILL get behind at some point, but don't worry, just catch up when you can.
  • Tangents, things you discovered down a rabbit hole, articles, pod casts, clips of epic scenes when we get to them all very welcome on the thread.
Spoiler free summary , courtesy of Chat GPT below. Schmoop has book summaries so I will post those at the relevant points. ** Les Misérables is a classic novel by Victor Hugo that explores justice, compassion, and the struggle for dignity in 19th-century France. At its core, the book follows the lives of several interconnected characters from different social classes as they navigate poverty, law, love, and moral choice. Rather than focusing on a single hero or plotline, the novel paints a wide picture of society—showing how personal decisions are shaped by systems like the legal system, economic inequality, and social expectations. Key themes include:
  • Justice vs. mercy — how laws affect people differently, and whether strict punishment leads to fairness
  • Redemption and moral growth — the possibility of change, even after hardship
  • Poverty and inequality — the daily realities of people living on the margins
  • Love and sacrifice — care for others as a powerful force for good
  • Social responsibility — how individual actions impact the wider community
The novel is known for:
  • Deep character development
  • Emotional intensity
  • Philosophical reflections on society and humanity
  • Detailed descriptions of history and everyday life
Overall, Les Misérables is less about a single storyline and more about asking big questions: What does it mean to be a good person? How should society treat its most vulnerable? And can compassion change lives?

Need laugh emoji back!

Pashazade · 21/10/2026 22:30

Dammit so I responded about 4 hours ago on my phone and didn’t hit send @Piggywaspushed. I’m imagining she put her hand over it and pulled the barrel away from him and across her body. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have finally caught back up. There have been some wonderfully thoughtful passages about the mob in the last few chapters. So many good quotations.

Pashazade · 23/10/2026 14:35

Oh I’m rather wondering what’s going to happen now. I’m not sure whether it’s now the same day Epoinine died or not! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think we’re catching up / Hugo’s doing the back story. So JVJ sees the traces of Cosette’s letter which Eponine has given to Marius; that evening he goes outside to think and becomes aware there’s a disturbance. I think it’s the same day.

Onceuponatimethen · 24/10/2026 08:11

I’m assuming they are all going to end up on the barricade for a bloody finale, but there are actually quite a lot of chapters left! Maybe someone ends up on the run

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 24/10/2026 09:29

Worried about what JVJ is going to do when he finds Marius…really hoping for a happy ending but as you say @Onceuponatimethen there’s still a lot of book left! Though half of that could be a philosophical detour, knowing Hugo 😄

MotherOfCatBoy · 24/10/2026 11:24

Haven’t we still got the famous sewers to come? God knows how but that bit is notorious…

Onceuponatimethen · 24/10/2026 22:08

@MotherOfCatBoy @DuPainDuVinDuFromage I think you are both right. Let’s expect a detour by way of some drains. I have started to get gripped and may end up reading ahead a bit now

Pashazade · 25/10/2026 08:04

No sewers yet…….plus I am somewhat concerned as to what JvJ is going to do…….its feeling rather ambiguous.

Um, yes, his feelings towards Cosette seem rather 'conflicted' - a detail which I could have done without, Victor.

Onceuponatimethen · 25/10/2026 16:38

I hadn’t appreciated (or if I once knew I had forgotten) that this book was originally published in instalments, so reading it in short parts is quite close to how the original readers encountered it. Makes me feel better about my bursts of reading rather than steady day by day reading!!

Um, yes, his feelings towards Cosette seem rather 'conflicted' - a detail which I could have done without, Victor.

A bit like my ick towards the end of TCOMC when he marries … I won’t say more in case others want to read it for the plot but suffice to say I was … disappointed.

Waawo · 26/10/2026 16:33

I'm still processing the fact that JVJ is somehow on the "wrong side". I know it was mentioned earlier that he did his National Guard "duty" once a month or so; but we're right up against it now, he puts on his NG uniform and arms himself then hits the street during this period of uprising; and just to hammer home the point, the authority Gavroche runs into in the next chapter is of course a National Guardsman. Victor has spent the whole novel convincing us to trust JVJ even when he's doing something ostensibly wrong; now he's doing something that's officially on the side of law and order, it feels terribly wrong and like some kind of betrayal.

Piggywaspushed · 26/10/2026 17:18

Ah,no, JVJ will come good, I am sure!

TimeforaGandT · 26/10/2026 22:44

Yes, @Onceuponatimethen - I agree as I am tending to read a week at a time and these short bursts are working well for me to get back into the plot each time and it's nice to think that's what Hugo intended/expected.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/10/2026 22:46

I am not sure if JV is planning on rescuing Marius or murdering him!

SanFranBear · 27/10/2026 01:16

I've just caught up after being on holiday for a week and blimey, it's all kicking off isn't it!

I am thoroughly enjoying myself and am wondering what on earth is going to happen given we've got two months, so 60 chapters still to go!!

Thanks so much @Pashazade for your reading guide - I've said it before but I'll say it again, I'd be lost without you!

MotherOfCatBoy · 27/10/2026 07:26

Perhaps in uniform is the only way he can move around the city, given there’s probably a curfew and anyone in plain clothes would be challenged?
(Had to laugh at Gavroche and his wheelbarrow though, singing at the top of his voice!)

Pashazade · 27/10/2026 08:18

@SanFranBear glad to help. I always enjoy deciding how much of a sentence teaser to give!
I’m also not sure what JVJ has planned…

First, of course, a diversion… 😂

Tarahumara · 27/10/2026 22:11

But of course...!

Onceuponatimethen · 28/10/2026 15:42

Mais oui!

Waawo · 30/10/2026 06:15

Well! That's quite a way to make an entrance!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/10/2026 07:23

Today's chapter is excellent.
