I'm currently reading The Accidental Tourist which I'm enjoying, I love her portrayals of inter-generational family life and all the complications that can come with it. Other ones of hers I've enjoyed are:

Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant
Searching For Caleb
A Spool of Blue Thread
French Braid

Can anyone recommend any others, or are there books of hers that maybe aren't so good?

Ladder of Years is excellent

I just re read earthly possessions. I love Anne Tyler and have read all her books. I remember enjoying a slipping down life

shadylane · 25/03/2026 08:14

Ladder of years, patchwork planet, saint maybe, the accidental tourist. Brilliant writer.

Clawdy · 25/03/2026 08:22

The Amateur Marriage is one of my favourite books.

friedaddedchilli · 25/03/2026 08:26

Love Anne Tyler. The Accidental Tourist is her best. But honestly, they’re all the same book, so you can’t go wrong.

I've just finished Three Days in June, and it was lovely

garlictwist · 25/03/2026 17:14

Breathing Lessons is an absolute masterpiece. I first read it when I was about 14 and am 44 now and have read it so many times since. I do feel like some of her more recent works are a bit...light touch.

beginwithasinglestep · 25/03/2026 18:08

I've read 4 of the above-mentioned and loved every one, esp accidental tourist. Must choose my next one... Thanks for all the ideas

WonsWoo · 25/03/2026 18:10

I read Dinner at the homesick restaurant in my late teens. It really kick started my love of reading. Noting some of these that I haven’t read to add to my list of ‘to read’.

KeyLimeCake · 25/03/2026 18:15

I loved Celestial Navigations as well as many mentioned above.
I slightly prefer her male protagonist books. Accidental Tourist is a masterpiece.

Least favourite was Redhead by the side of the road. And Clock Dance.
I think her back catalogue is better than her newer books.

Arran2024 · 26/03/2026 22:21

I recently read 3 Days in June. It's very short but very good.

I've read lots of her work. I didn't enjoy Digging to America, which is about interracial adoption. It was well received, but as an adopter, I thought she focused on surface, cultural, identityissues rather than on the deeper issues of loss and displacement.

Abustedflush · 27/03/2026 22:09

I’m a massive fan too.
Loved Three Days in June, and one of my favourite stories that has stuck with me for years is The Amateur Marriage.

WinterFrogs · 28/03/2026 17:07

I loved French Braid. I have also read A Spool Of Blue Thread but I've forgotten most of it so it must have been a while ago. Thanks for the thread. I will look up the others. To add to my growing tbr pile 😳

TurnipsAndParsnips · 28/03/2026 17:18

Back When We Were Grown Ups is excellent.

AndresyFiorella · 28/03/2026 17:20

Yes! Ladder of Years and Patchwork Planet were my absolute favourites. I got obsessed with her for a while but started to find the cumulative effect of them a bit depressing, particularly Saint Maybe and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. She's an amazing writer.

TurnipsAndParsnips · 28/03/2026 17:21

Ladder of Years and A Slipping Down Life too.

LadyCathdeBourgh · 28/03/2026 17:38

I loved Digging to America. I have no experience of adoption though so didn’t pick up on @Arran2024’s points.
A Spool of Blue Thread is my favourite.

champagnetrial · 28/03/2026 17:38

I love being in Tyler's world for a bit, but I honestly can never remember what the books are about when I've finished! The exceptions to this are Digging to America (because the subject matter is a little different) and Ladder of Years, because it has a great description of how a woman can be a wife and mother and yet be totally invisible to her family (they can't remember the colour of her eyes when she goes missing).

Wallabyone · 03/04/2026 17:36

I‘m just reading my first Anne Tyler-Three Days in June. I don’t know much about her but picked it up browsing in Waterstones. Blurb and cover both very appealing!

BeaAndBen · 20/04/2026 12:48

Ladder Of Years and Breathing Lessons are probably my favourites but I love most of them.
I read A Spool Of Blue Thread a couple of months ago and definitely rate it highly.
