I'm currently ill and have been enjoying Harriet Lane's psychological thrillers (have read Other People's Fun and Alys, Always so far).
Does anyone know of similar authors? I don't want anything with loads of violence but something suspenseful that draws you in.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister - Jen sees her son Todd commit a violent crime... but then she wakes up and it's the day before, can she stop Fate?

I like the Freda Klein books by Nicci French. Best read in order (but not absolutely necessary) from "Blue Monday" to "Day of the Dead".

Eta Other Nicci French books are good too.

The Party by Elizabeth Day
How to Kill you Family by Bella Mackie ( black comedy)
Engleby by Sebastian Faulks (very black comedy)
Barbara Vines are brilliant also

Look Closer by David Ellis.

Is that the same Nicci French who sang a cover version of “Total Ecliise of the Heart” back in the 90’s do you know?

Sorry for the random question, and I might even have the name wrong!

I don't think so.
This one is actually two people: a married couple called Nicci Gerrard and Sean French who write together.

I'd also recommend Minette Walters as well.

Thanks! I might give it a try regardless, the name just jumped out at me!

I read all those some years ago and was hooked.

I admired her and loved the London vibe.

I'm a great fan of Patricia Highsmith.
I've got all her novels and her short story collections. She is brilliant if you like the psychological thriller genre.

You really can't beat Rebecca. I would also mention And Then They Were None, which is not a typical Agatha Christie whodunnit at all. Before the Fact by Francis Iles, pen name of Anthony Berkeley Cox. This was the inspiration for the Hitchcock film Suspicion.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/03/2026 21:02

Gone girl, the girl on the train, the house maid - all good books and movies too

pastaandpesto · 14/03/2026 21:05

The Push by Ashley Audrain.

mizu · 14/03/2026 21:19

Lie with Me - Sabine Durrant is a fab page turner.

OneToThree · 25/03/2026 21:30

Behind Closed Doors by B A Paris.

Lostearrings · 25/03/2026 21:39

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides still chills me several years after I read it

flipperdipper5 · 25/03/2026 22:37

It’s marmite but I really liked Behind Her Eyes. The ending blew me away.

aiblins · 26/03/2026 18:02

Second Sabine Durrant- she's great. Liz Nugent's books might fit the bill too- they're psychological without too much overt violence.

greenteaandlimes · 26/03/2026 18:13

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
(not sure if that counts? Utterly psychologically spellbinding though)
