The last couple of audiobooks I have enjoyed were:

  • The Names by Florence Knapp and read by Dervla Kirwan
  • Dream Count, written and read by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
  • American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, read by Yareli Arizmendi

I want something along these lines - a gentle female voice quietly telling a compelling story about women.

I’ve recently listened to One of Us by Elizabeth Day and really enjoyed it.

It’s not exactly a story about women but it has strong female characters and the entire story unfolds through each of the characters.

I really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed Americanah, also by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, read by Adjoa Andoh.

Also loved The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O Farrell, read by Genevieve Gaunt

The Embroidered Book by Kate Hearthfield was like a female Mr. Norrell & Jonathan Strange set in Versailles. I thought the narrator was good.

Psithurism · 06/03/2026 20:21

I recently listened to Whiteout by R S Burnett, the main character is female and it’s gripping to listen to. I normally struggle with getting into audiobooks but this one works.

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett - read by Meryl Streep - it’s about a young girl that becomes an actress for a while but her life takes a different course - so it’s quite fitting to be read by Streep. It was so good I’ve listened to it twice!

The lost apocthecary by Sarah penner

dictionary of lost words pip Williams

might fit? I love both these books

I'm currently listening to The Vanishing of Margaret Small. It's about a woman with learning difficulties, in her 70s now but looking back at her life spent in a hospital. It's fascinating to hear about the different attitudes in society in the 50s, 60s & 70s, but also heartbreaking to hear how people, but women in particular, were treated.

Haven't finished it yet but I'm enjoying Love Untold by Ruth Jones, who narrates it herself on the Audible version.

Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney.

Two hander narration, definitely a twist. I loved it.

Fasterthan40 · 22/03/2026 21:30

I just finished the Golden Gate by Amy Chua. Strong women and really interesting story but male narrator unfortunately.

AltitudeCheck · 02/04/2026 00:20

Briefly, A Delicious Life by Nell Stevens (Ell Potter narrator) is fantastic.

Fiftyand · 02/04/2026 00:36

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo

The Secret History is great. I've read the book many times too. Donna Tartt reads it and really brings the characters to life.

i have just finished listening to State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. Absolutely brilliant writing! Highly recommend x

Not read by a woman but I really enjoyed the goldfinch by Donna tartt

StJulian2023 · 13/05/2026 20:59

Tracey Chevalier’s The Glass Maker is beautifully read on Audible and has a strong female protagonist. I loved it

Dappy777 · 13/05/2026 22:40

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway is gorgeous on audiobook. I wish Joanna Lumley had recorded it. That would be my dream team - Woolf and Lumley united.

I also love Iris Murdoch.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 13/05/2026 23:06

I have just looked and most of Clare Chambers’ books are on audible and they are all excellent and women centred stories.

Penelopeeee · 13/05/2026 23:23

Braiding Sweetgrass written and read by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Beautiful, interesting and she has a great voice, talks me to sleep every night

SparklyBrickViper · 14/05/2026 20:18

DB Stephens The Serial Killers Support Group and The Serial Killers Support Network.

“When Jess Pendle agrees to attend a support group to meet other women who have lived similar experiences, she doesn’t expect much.
The group has been set up for like-minded women to come together, but when their therapist leaves, they close the blinds and find a new, and altogether more deadly way to support each other…”

Both are excellent audiobooks.

HalzTangz · 14/05/2026 21:12

I really enjoyed the Michael Wood books based on the character DCI Matilda Drake, there's 11 books in the series

Isthisright220 · 14/05/2026 21:18

This is good to know, I’m about to start the paperback!

Do you like autobiographies? Kathy Burkes is brilliant and so is Chers.
