I’m going to the Persephone Bookshop In Bath!

What shall I buy? I have never read Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, so that’s one. I plan to buy myself one of their lovely tote bags.
I’m also quite happy to make an early start on Christmas shopping! As Bath is a long way from me, it’s going to be a one off trip so all suggestions welcome

Milton Place. The Victorian Chaise-Longue. Saplings. The Making of a Marchioness

EscapadeVelocity · 22/02/2026 14:41

Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski

Honestly one of the greatest books ever written.

Mama1980 · 22/02/2026 14:43

Miss Buncle’s Book, it’s a lovely, light book that makes me so happy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/02/2026 15:14

Definitely Miss P. I think they’re doing another one now by the same writer, but I haven’t read it yet. I’m waiting until I can buy it in person.

Buy the catalogue, generous with artwork with a well thought out page per book.

Persephone day, 25th April, tickets surprisingly still available.

HarlotOTara · 22/02/2026 22:49

Any Dorothy Whipple book, so readable - sad they left Lamb Conduit Street in London

Glitterbiscuits · 23/02/2026 11:58

Oh, I don’t know there was a catalogue! Good recommendation, thanks
I won’t be able to get to there in April.
Im miles away. But I’m in Bristol in March and can make a detour to Bath! I’m quite excited

As mentioned earlier, Miss Buncle's Book is lovely. Persephone had a big hit last year with Crooked Cross by Sally Carson. A forgotten masterpiece that predicted the rise of the Nazis.
If you have time, Bath has two other great bookshops - Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights (near to Persephone, behind the Jollys store), and Topping & Company (near the Roman Baths). Also a large Waterstones.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 14:26

Topping and Company is lovely. I must admit that I wasn’t so taken with Mr B’s - very claustrophobic and the service wasn’t very friendly.

ChurchTower · 23/02/2026 14:58

I've just read Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield. Absolutely loved it.

Dappy777 · 23/02/2026 15:12

If you are in Bath, surely you should buy a Jane Austen novel.

The thing I like about this island is the way its literature is sort of woven into the landscape. To me, the Lake District means Wordsworth, the Yorkshire moors mean Ted Hughes and the Brontes, Dorset means Thomas Hardy, the rural south west means Shakespeare, Kent means Chaucer, London means Dickens, Oxford means Oscar Wilde, and so on.

EscapadeVelocity · 23/02/2026 16:01

Have you not read any of the volumes published by Persephone, @Dappy777?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 16:20

Yes, one should indeed consider reading Austen for a trip to Bath, but one cannot purchase her work in Persephone. One has to (gulp) go to a normal bookshop for that, for ordinary folk. Have the shades of Persephone been thus polluted?

JennyChawleigh · 23/02/2026 16:22

Seconding 'The Crooked Cross'by Sally Carson and 'Saplings' by Noel Streatfeild

High Wages by Dorothy Whipple is one of my favourite books!

And also adding another vote for The Crooked Cross

Flowersandfauna · 23/02/2026 19:35

Go to Mr B’s, the best bookshop ever!

Celiathebanshee · 23/02/2026 20:00

I was there on Saturday (and Toppings, and Mr B’s 🤣) and it was full of ladies of a certain age making the pilgrimage. I bought Operation Heartbreak to add to my growing collection- it’s the first novel of the Operation Mincemeat story. You can’t go wrong though, just have a good browse and see what calls to you

StrugglingwithIvanhoe · 23/02/2026 20:12

If you like early sci fi I recommend The Hopkins Manuscript by RC Sherriff.

Paraguay · 23/02/2026 20:15

Christ, it's just a bookshop

Oh, and the excellent secondhand book stall in the covered market! (Just unpacked my handbag and found another book I bought there 🤦‍♀️)

Perhaps this isn’t the thread for you?
OP, my fave is Mariana by Monica Dickens

FolioQuarto · 23/02/2026 20:36

Make sure you go to Mr Bs Emporium too, it is just a short walk from the Persephone shop. They are totally different but two amazing bookshops.

My favourite Persephone book is The Children Who Lived In A Barn. I read it many times as a child, then lost my copy so was delighted to find it had been republished.

No bookshop is ever, ‘Just a bookshop’ and some are more bookshop than others.
