Apologies if this has been done before but has anyone read this? I’m part way through and think it’s so well written but have a sense that it’s going to a very dark place.

Yes it is very dark. Quite disturbing actually; I loved it. Enjoy!

EmmasDilemmas · 14/02/2026 19:57

Yes I have read it and yes it gets worse, it’s harrowing. It is well written but for me not enough to compensate for how unfailingly bleak it is. Though I know others feel otherwise.

BitterTits · 14/02/2026 19:57

I haven't long finished it. It's relentlessly dark! I mainly listened to it on Audible - a great performance.

WinterFrogs · 14/02/2026 19:59

Very disturbing, got about a third of the way through.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 14/02/2026 20:14

Thanks to all of you, I’m going to read to the end.

I loved it but it is harrowing and heartbreaking. Brace yourself OP.

SheSpeaks · 14/02/2026 20:17

I finished it, I didn’t mind the writing but I didn’t really see the point of it. Bad things happen and worse things too. I got cross with most of the characters that they just wallowed in them for the entire book.

Yes, it’s misery porn. Unless you enjoy watching a frankly incredible plot load Jude with misery after misery, and hold over detailed descriptions of child abuse and child prostitution till close to the end like it’s some kind of money shot, I’d save yourself the bother.

GreenEyesIsBack · 15/02/2026 09:26

I hated it but saw the play and whilst it wasn't exactly enjoyable, it was so well done I appreciated it and am glad I went.

blueskyview · 15/02/2026 09:40

Yep misery lit also I felt it got silly and unbelievable the further on I got with it. Characters not very likeable either.

This is how I felt about it.

staringatthesun · 17/02/2026 14:55

I read it last year, not an easy read but I thought it was excellent. I also saw the play with a friend who had not read the book, she was sobbing and visibly shaken, so yes, it gets very dark.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 17/02/2026 17:24

So a Marmite book then. Thanks for the opinions, I'm still going.

I couldn’t put it down but it was so harrowing I had to have breaks and read some trash in between as it just gets bleaker and bleaker. I was giving updates ro people at work as I read it and they were horrified

holjam · 20/02/2026 17:45

I adored this book when I got going with it. I did take me a few chapters to fully get into it. But it’s one of my favourites and have re-read it a couple of times since.

mamaduckbone · 21/02/2026 10:51

I’m in the misery porn camp - it just got so ridiculous how many awful things happened to one person in their life that by the end I was just cross.
I know a lot of people say it’s the best book they’ve ever read etc etc but it didn’t do it for me. Good luck op!

Lurcherlover65 · 21/02/2026 11:17

I loved the book but it did seem far fetched. Why did none of those close to him get him help (especially his Doctor friend ) It really made me question everything that was going on.
Do not read if you have had trauma in your life as it is triggering.

It made me cross too 🤣

I hated it, relentless sadness, pain and misery... my friend found it strangely uplifting, managed to take from it some beauty, that someone could have all that trauma and still find a kind of love and happiness... definitely Marmite!

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/02/2026 13:21

I hated it. Misery, misery, misery and just as you think it might be getting better it gets worse.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 28/02/2026 13:17

I thought that I should report back after you all kindly gave me your opinions.
I didn't finish it, I found that I couldn't bear it. I got as far as the abusive lover and couldn't go on. I think that it's a remarkable book about love, loyalty and cruelty and the writing is exceptional. But too much pain for me ( and I am well known for hating books with happy endings)
