This is good too but I guess you've probably read it already:

www.amazon.co.uk/Winter-Madrid-C-J-Sansom/dp/0330411985/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213546314&sr =1-1

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Set in Mexico, magic realism.

ScarletPimpernel1976 · 15/06/2008 19:45

Bell Canto by Ann Patchett and Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon by Jorge Amado - both set in South America and good holiday reads!

northernrefugee39 · 16/06/2008 08:24

Donna Tartt s wonderful.
And Paul Auster I second that.
Sri Hustvedt, What I loved- a great book. She's Paul Auster's wife. She's just written a new one, but it won't be out in pb yet.

Also Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections is an epic good read.

I really like Alice Hoffman, they're a lighter read, but I think they're well written and great stories.

Anita Shrieve? Well written too.

I think Patrick McGrath is an under rated writer, I thought Port Mungo was terrific.

northernrefugee39 · 16/06/2008 08:28

I prefer Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Isabel Allende.
If you like that sort of stuff, try Port Mungo by Patrick McGrath. It's not magic realism, but it has that atmosphere of a different exotic place, and is a compelling story.

lizandlulu · 20/06/2008 21:10

how about torey hayden books?

janeite · 20/06/2008 21:10

Oh I'm glad this thread has come back to life, as I am yet again bookless (I read too damn quickly is my problem!). I have just read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy and would love to know what anybody else thought of it.

Also - you've just reminded me to order the Allende biog: I'd forgotten all about it.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/06/2008 15:37

I've just read Year Of Wonders - about Eyam in the plague. Thought it was fab.

popsycal · 08/08/2008 20:10
