I’ve read the Names by Florence Knapp and Life After Life by Kate Atkinson in the last coupe of weeks and while they are both good reads I’m just depressed by them now. I won’t plot spoil and say why.

I need something much more cheerful! It’s grey and rainy and January is endless.

What could cheer me up?

Wodehouse. The Code Of The Woosters is a good place to start.

If you want lighthearted easy reads Jill Mansell and Sophie Kinsella are great.

I finished John Boyne's The echo Chamber recently and it was so funny. Very contemporary with lots of brilliant comedy dialogue. A thoroughly enjoyable read

Second this. I was going to suggest Full Moon though, it’s my go-to when I need cheering up.

The Crazy Rich Asians books are fun easy reading

Yes, when it comes to funny and uplifting, Wodehouse is in a league of his own. His writing is a miracle. Stephen Fry once said that it’s no coincidence Wodehouse is the most popular writer in prisons and psychiatric hospitals. In Fry’s words, he is a “healing spirit for hurt souls.”

Small tip - read him out loud when you’re alone. It’s better than Prozac.

Lissa Evans books are lovely. I've read Old Baggage and V for Victory recently, both good reads.

I recently enjoyed The Woman Who Got Her Spark Back by Fiona Gibson. Well written, easy to read and uplifting. Just a nice story.

Theo of Golden
Sorry, can't remember the author.
Heartwarming.

OneBusyFinch · 29/01/2026 17:21

Yes yes to PG Wodehouse!

the Adrian Mole books always make me laugh - especially the school trip to the British Museum

Also love the first Bridget Jones book and Blott on the landscape by Tom Sharpe

I've just finished The Miseducation of Evie Epworth, by Matson Taylor. I picked it up fairly randomly from the library and really enjoyed it as a light-hearted easy read. Definitely both uplifting and funny.

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K.Jerome is one of the funniest things I've ever read.

The Lark by E Nesbit is a lovely light and uplifting book about two young women having a gentle adventure.

Tonissister · 29/01/2026 17:35

The Mapp and Lucia books by FE Benson are fun. A bit dated but they are all about petty rivalries between two women in Rye. They are very silly and relaxing to read.

TheBlueRobin · 30/01/2026 06:58

Bob Mortimer's fiction. Semi mystery- semi just ridiculous

SpunkyKhakiScroller · 30/01/2026 21:43

Lissa Evans is great and you can't go wrong with Terry Pratchett if you want humour and humanism in one package.

You might also like the cosy Japanese genre - my favourite is What you are looking for is in the library

wanted2BThalia · 30/01/2026 21:47

Mother Hens by Sophie McCartney -hilarious read

MissAustenMadeAQuilt · 31/01/2026 16:26

Second Mapp and Lucia and offer The Eliza Stories by Barry Pain.

Diary of a Nobody too of course!

Wimpod · 14/02/2026 16:11

I have wandered onto the "Murder by Month" series by Jess Lourey thanks to the Kindle algorithm recommending me authors. I did not know Cosy Crime was a thing tbh, but the main character's dialogue and inner thoughts genuinely makes me smile as I am reading/listening. They are on Kindle with free audiobook so I do a bit of both.

Another vote for Diary Of A Nobody! So funny after so many years. A Victorian David Brent!

RobinTheCavewoman · 21/02/2026 08:30

The Wedding People has some dark themes but is overall fun and frothy.
