Any good novels featuring Greenland?

With Greenland featuring so much in the news right now, it’s made me realise I know virtually nothing about the country. Can anyone recommend any good novels featuring Greenland and the Inuit?

It’s pretty old (1992?) but I really enjoyed Miss Smilla’s Feeling For Snow, by Peter Høeg.

Came on to say Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow but @YourWinter beat me to it!

A thing I remember about that is Smilla's strong feelings about Danish racist and colonial attitudes to Greenlanders.

The other thing no-one is saying about Greenland is that it is (geographically speaking) part of North America. Maybe in half a century or so Nunavut will secede from Canada and join a union with Greenland.

I wonder will Trump move in on Canada eventually?

Jane Smiley, The Greenlanders. Historical novel.

Thank you - I’ve realised I read Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow years ago - for some reason I’d blanked out the Greenland section and had it in my head as Scandi Noir …😳. I’ll have a look for The Greenlanders

Borgen: Power & Glory on Netflix is partly set in Greenland if you want to watch something as well as read. Like others Miss Smilla was the first book I thought of.

Cold Earth by Sarah Moss is a very good novel about an archaeological dig in Greenland that makes you feel like you are really there, living the experience and also the experience of an earlier settlement - I recommend

Not a novel but An African in Greenland
Book by Tété-Michel Kpomassie
is a well regarded memoir about a man who travelled from Togo to Greenland over a decade. Interesting article here

What about some of the ancient sagas, most set in Iceland but should have also set out the claim for Greenland as well, Erik the Red I think is said to have sailed on from there to America

I was also going to recommend this. A fascinating read giving a lot of insight into the people and the culture.

I also enjoyed Sarah Moss' book "Cold Earth" already mentioned above.

I absolutely loved "The First Crossing of Greenland" by Fridtjof Nansen. This is also not a novel and it's a bit niche. Nansen the polar explorer skis across Greenland in 1888!

Leaving out faction/non fiction - I would recommend Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 20/01/2026 22:05

Agree with Cold Earth.
