Welcome to the first thread of the Les Miserables Read-a-long.

I'll be using the Christine Donougher translation for posting in the main, but it doesn't matter which translation you have, they seem to follow the same breakdown. I have not seen the film, the musical, and have very little knowledge about the book, but suspect I will be doing all of these Christmas 2026.

The only rules
The plan is to read ONE chapter a day and contribute/follow the thread as you see fit. There are c. 365 chapters, so we plan to take the year to read slowly and really get under the skin. Sometimes we have clustered chapters in past read-a-longs, and people do sometimes read ahead. All fine - but No spoilers until the relevant day.

Notes from previous read-a-longs

  • How you manage one a day is entirely up to you, some people prefer to store them and read all the chapters for the week at once, some read each day.
  • Sometimes these books can go off on a tangent all their own (looking at Mr Tolstoy), stick with it :-)
  • All formats and translations welcome. Sometimes the translation discussions are some of the most interesting conversations.
  • You WILL get behind at some point, but don't worry, just catch up when you can.
  • Tangents, things you discovered down a rabbit hole, articles, pod casts, clips of epic scenes when we get to them all very welcome on the thread.

Spoiler free summary , courtesy of Chat GPT below. Schmoop has book summaries so I will post those at the relevant points.

**

Les Misérables is a classic novel by Victor Hugo that explores justice, compassion, and the struggle for dignity in 19th-century France.
At its core, the book follows the lives of several interconnected characters from different social classes as they navigate poverty, law, love, and moral choice. Rather than focusing on a single hero or plotline, the novel paints a wide picture of society—showing how personal decisions are shaped by systems like the legal system, economic inequality, and social expectations.
Key themes include:

  • Justice vs. mercy — how laws affect people differently, and whether strict punishment leads to fairness
  • Redemption and moral growth — the possibility of change, even after hardship
  • Poverty and inequality — the daily realities of people living on the margins
  • Love and sacrifice — care for others as a powerful force for good
  • Social responsibility — how individual actions impact the wider community

The novel is known for:

  • Deep character development
  • Emotional intensity
  • Philosophical reflections on society and humanity
  • Detailed descriptions of history and everyday life

Overall, Les Misérables is less about a single storyline and more about asking big questions:
What does it mean to be a good person? How should society treat its most vulnerable? And can compassion change lives?

Oh my goodness - I've been wanting to do this for years and have had a copy of Les Mis on my shelf since forever - one of the few books I brought with me when I moved. Absolutely count me in!

I've got the Penguin Classics version, translated by Norman Denny and even though I've seen the musical, didn't really 'get' it or enjoy it but I expect (hope) its because you just don't have the time for the character development and context you get in the book.

I've been on a couple of the Tolstoy read-a-long threads and find reading my chapter last thing before bed works best for me.

This has made me very happy - thank you, @AgualusasL0ver 😁

Thank you for the thread, checking in!

Checking in. Excited for my first MN readalong. Thanks @AgualusasL0ver

I received the Penguin edition for Xmas. Thank you so much for organising. I saw a wonderful exhibition of Victor Hugo’s prints at the RA a few months ago and that reminded me I have never read his works!

VikingNorthUtsire · 30/12/2025 11:42

Checking in. Thank you for organising.

Merci beaucoup!

Waawo · 30/12/2025 12:03

Checking in :) Thanks @AgualusasL0ver for the thread. I have the Donougher translation on my Kindle and will probably buy a paper copy after a couple of weeks, that's what happened with W&P anyway, these days I just get more joy out of reading "books for pleasure" on paper.

I'll also be struggling to decode the story in Esperanto, as it's a goal for 2026 to move beyond children's books in that language. Possibly a poor choice to start with, since the translation I have is from 1914, when Esperanto was still somewhat in flux; but at one chapter a day, it will be interesting to see if I can keep up.

Oh this is a wonderful book! I’ve read the Norman Denny version twice and it’s fabulous. I won’t be able to join this read-along as I have a number of other books on the go, but will follow along on this thread as no doubt, FOMO will take over and I’ll have to take part!

CornishLizard · 30/12/2025 12:27

Thanks Agualusa for organising this!

I hadn’t been thinking of joining as I didn’t manage to keep up with KL, and like SanFran I didn’t enjoy or follow the musical, but I’m also now struck with FOMO. I’ve got a library copy (away so can’t check the translation) and I’ve now ordered a French vol. 1 so will try to dip my toes into the French too.

Good to see you Viking - I remember you led the W&P readalong.

AgualusasL0ver · 30/12/2025 12:34

@Waawo Wow, Esperanto. I am very excited to hear how this goes.

One thing I will say @CornishLizard and others, is that generally speaking the chapters here are significantly shorter than Kristin, which may help. @bunnypenny We will welcome you with open arms whenever you decide to chip in.

Thank you for this thread. I’ve had Les Miserables on my audible list for months, and needed this thread to overcome my inertia.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/12/2025 13:04

Je suis là! Merci, Agua.
I've had a look at chapter one in French.
It's very readable and chapters are short.
Looking forward to it. On y va!

FizzingAda · 30/12/2025 14:08

Checking in and looking forward to it, thanks for organising this 💐

BlueFairyBugsBooks · 30/12/2025 14:17

Just checking in. Still have to dig out my copy, I know where it is, at the bottom of a box. Im aiming to read a chunk every Friday (7 chapters at a time) as thats the only day I have off of work every week. And also no volunteering. But let's see how long that lasts.

Fatsnowflake · 30/12/2025 14:18

Checking in - looking forward to starting this.

MissisBee · 30/12/2025 15:37

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 30/12/2025 15:49

Thank you for the thread @AgualusasL0ver ! Looking forward to this, I'm going to read the (short) introduction today so I'm all ready for chapter 1 on Thursday! This is my copy, for anyone interested in the different covers (it's the Norman Denny translation, from 1976).

I do love a cover @DuPainDuVinDuFromage - there don’t appear to be so many variations for this book.
