Ideas for long haul flight reading list

I’m going to New York just after Christmas and don’t particularly enjoy flying anymore. Am planning to download loads of books to my kindle hoping to lose myself in a really good read as a distraction!

Would love to start a series of books- maybe detective or historical fiction.

Any recommendations?

Not quite what you were asking for, but I read The Handmaids Tale on a flight and it was so gripping I stayed awake throughout and had minimal jet lag.

The Seeker by SG MacLean, there are 5 books in the series, historical crime set during Cromwell’s protectorate, very good.
Edited to add; Just spotted whilst checking spelling of authors name all 5 are £20 as a Kindle set on Amazon right now.

Like this idea thanks - I could read The Testaments on the flight home! Watched first couple of seasons of Handmaids Tale but would still like to read it

C.J Sansom? Mysteries solved by one of Cromwell's men.
Tanya (sp) French-murder mysteries set in Ireland. Each one can stand along but recurring characters are highlighted in each one.

Crime and Punushment. I couldn't put it down.

Hellohah · 17/12/2025 20:37

Sherlock Holmes, you can get the complete works on Kindle for 99p.

IdaGlossop · 17/12/2025 20:44

If you want a fictionalised French Revolution, Hilary Mantel's 'A place of greater safety'.

Much less highbrow - in fact not highbrow at all - Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone with the wind'.

Diaries are good for longhaul flights, I discovered, reading Conservative politicians Alan Clark's years ago.

PeanutbutterPickle · 18/12/2025 16:02

@ThomasinaHardy I have read all of C J Samson and absolutely loved them. I’ll have a look at the Tanya French

@Knittedanimal been on my to read list for ages- maybe it’s time has come!

@Hellohah great idea. I love watching Sherlock Holmes stories on film and TV
Never read any yet

@IdaGlossop Place of Greater Safety is one of my favourite books. Diaries could work - hadn’t thought of that but could be good to dip in and out of

thanks everyone 😊

C. J. Sansom’s Shardlake novels

Sherlock Holmes (at their best, they’ve never been bettered. Heaven, for me, is listening to Stephen Fry read Sherlock Holmes and P. G. Wodehouse)

T. H. White: Sword in the Stone

Robert Graves: I Claudius (and watch the superlative TV adaptation with Brian Blessed)

springintoaction2 · 19/12/2025 17:05

Second Gone with Wind - read it over one or 2 days when travelling. Also Roots - if you haven't read already.

Beachhutgirl · 19/12/2025 19:30

Not a series, but on the way to New York I'd read Francis Spufford's Golden Hill. Set in New York in 1746, so should start getting you in the right mood.

PeanutbutterPickle · 21/12/2025 12:50

@Beachhutgirl This looks so good- not heard of it before but it’s on the kindle now ready to go!

@springintoaction2 not sure in Gone With The Wind- only because I really hate the film 🤣. Interested in Roots though

@Dappy777 read all Shardlake- my favourite type of book, brilliant writing, characters you care about and great storylines. Got Sherlock Holmes downloaded and good to go.

Will have a look at your other recommendations too- sound interesting

thanks all - not looking forward to the flight but can’t wait to get started on my reading list

Entitled kept me gripped on a recent long haul flight.
I then listened to Leonard & Hungry Paul on Audible on the way back and realised listening to a book was better than reading as my headphones blocked out a lot of background noise

I've just read Elizabeth Freemantle's Disobedient and really enjoyed it. Very well written and good characterisation.

carbonelthecat · 21/12/2025 15:33

I read the first of these ages ago (MIL passed it on) and enjoyed it - just looked on Amazon and the first volume of 10 is only £1.99, so picked them up! Deryn Lake - John Rawlings historical mysteries set in Georgian London.

I also really like the Falco mysteries by Lindsey Davies which are set in Ancient Rome.

cheapskatemum · 21/12/2025 15:36

Elly Griffiths, the Ruth Galloway series. I love the Shardlake novels & also love these. Set in modern day Norfolk, but the protagonist is an archeologist specialising in bones, so they often have a historical aspect.
