Reading the Bible

I'm reading the King James Bible, one book a month, but I'm finding it a bit hard going. Is there any guide I could get to help me with it?

When I first read Shakespeare, I looked at guides to get an idea of the plot, background and so on. That's the kind of thing I mean.

I'm not religious at all - I'm interested in the Bible's influence on literature and culture.

Thanks

I like the New Community Bible, which has good introductions and commentaries and a lot of cross-references. And there is a lot of online material, coming from many different religious traditions.

I have read through the bible a few times, not always chronologically, sometimes using a "Daily Reading Bible" that gives you a bit of both testaments and a psalm for everyday. If you are looking for supplementary information (from a non-religious point of view) then Isaac Asimovs Guide to the Bible is good - although parts are a bit dry!

I found a 2nd hand "New Lion Bible Guide", which seems to be what I'm looking for.

The Great Adventure Bible

Bible in a year with Fr Mike

Both are chronological with prophets tied in and explain what's going on
