Hello
Dad would like 'a couple books' for Christmas, no further guidance available! I'm hoping someone might be able to recommend some new out things so he wont have read them yet.
He's currently reading a book by James Patterson. I know he likes Lee Child, and he's given me some books by David Baldachii which he enjoyed. Occasionally see him with a Patricia Cornwall
He tried reading Game of Thrones but found it too confusing as he tends to only read in short bursts. He didn't get on with Terry Pratchett.

Harlan Coben or Michael Connelly?

John Grisham and Mark Billingham. Both good.

Karl Hill - Adam Black series is similar ish to Lee Child’s Reacher but Scottish
Mick Heron - Slow Horses is a great MI5 spy series
Kyla Stone - Edge of Collapse series is a post apocalyptic event series, very good
Michael Connelly - Harry Bosch series

Robert Galbraith

My dp loves the Slow Horses books by Mick Herron-sounds as if they might suit?

What about some gripping non-fiction?
The Secret Rooms by Catherine Bailey
On My Watch: Leading NATO by Jens Stoltenberg (I saw his talk in London; it was surprisingly full of laughs; Jens is a witty man.)

I fully support any book by the GREAT Michael Connelly; he's written LOADS of attention-holding books, not least the Lincoln Lawyer - a concept on the brink of its time.
After the Monsoon by Robert Karjel - perfectly combines a huge list of clichés (sell everything and sail around the world; autistic/allergic chlid; African pirates; scandi detectives AND more .. )

Michael Crichton.

Ken Follett thrillers.

DullAndUnconvincing · 24/11/2025 19:44

Ann Cleeves - the Vera and Shetland ones are good but there are newer ones
William Boyd - I think Gabriel’s Moon and The Predicament are his latest ones

Silverbirchleaf · 24/11/2025 19:48

Robert Harris books are a safe bet.
