Classic thriller audiobook recommendations

I know this will have been done to death and I didn't know whether to put this in the Podcast section. I'm looking for good audiobooks of the classic thriller, mystery or gripping drama type flavour.

Already done:
Strike / Robert Galbraith
Talented Mr Ripley
Graham Greene / Journey into fear
Woman in White

I love the following BBC Sounds series and have listened to them to death: Paul Temple / Marple / Poirot / Lord Peter Wimsey / Charles Paris / VI Warshawski

I don't like anything really olde worlde like Cadfael as I like characters who sound clean and have their own teeth. I don't reckon much to Richard Osman's books and Maigret is a bit dusty. I never got on with Josephine Tey after her being recommended here. Anything that ventures too much into the self-conscious 'cosy crime' is a no. I will paddle with Agatha Raisin but I will not fully submerge.

I sound fussy but if I'm going to commit 10-15 hours to something I don't want it to be rubbish.

I'm tempted by Campion. Is that Lord Peter Wimsey territory?

Not classic, but it might be worth trying the Lady and Lady's maid series by Alyssa Maxwell. Possibly too "Cosy crime" for you, hard to tell! I love the Louise Penny books as well, but not listened to the audiobooks, so don't know the quality of the narration.

I quite enjoy the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter, she writes Trent beautiful and his character development is quite wonderful and the story lines cohesive. Decent length audiobooks too but always go for the unabridged. I tend to alternate strike and Trent. I quite like some of the more modern Reacher audiobooks. His writing definitely improved with practice

Oh, the David Baldacci Memory Man series are worth a try as well.

Baldi.
Paulo Baldi, Franciscan priest on sabbatical as a lecturer. Set in Dublin.

I've listened to a couple in the Campion series, one I enjoyed very much, the other not so much, but they would be worth you giving it a go. I've not read Lord Peter Wimsey, so can't compare, sorry.

I've really enjoyed two of Anthony Horowitz crime series, however: the Magpie Murders and Hawthorne (which is read by Rory Kinnear, who is fantastic). I definitely recommend those.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I've ended up going for a Lawrence Block on Audible. Used to love the Hitman series and some of this other stuff but the narration is a bit too Bogarty and the sexism doesn't stand up well. Will definitely give Campion, Karin Slaughter, Lady's Maid and some of the others a go.

Baldi or the Christopher Marlowe Mysteries spring to mind immediately. DS Julie Enfield Investigates is another old school BBC thriller I've enjoyed. Imelda Staunton is fab in it

@FKAT I think if you have listened to the Strike books everything else is going to be a challenge. (Only joking but you know what I mean!)
I've nearly finished The Hallmarked man and am in awe, Robert Glenister is amazing. I adore listening to him .
I will keep an eye on your thread in case you come back again with more thoughts, thank you.

I like the Anthony Horowitz The Word is Murder series and would also recommend the Peter Diamond books by Peter Lovesey.

Ngaio Marsh, Marjorie Allingham, Dorothy L Sayers all among my favourites.

I was going to recommend Anna Massey reading Rebecca but it doesn't seem to be an available version anymore digitally.

It's really disappointing when Audible does this. There are other versions available but seem to mostly be abridged and there is one dramatisation. Anna Massey's version is perfect imo.

Karistyleaftea · 18/11/2025 22:28

@tobee I’ve got the Anna Massey version of Rebecca and I agree, it is sublime!

SheilaFentiman · 18/11/2025 22:51

Are the BBC Sounds Wimseys the dramatised ones or the unabridged?

SheilaFentiman · 18/11/2025 22:52

The Ian Carmichael unabridged Wimseys were the best. The current Audible narrator is a woman and - whilst fine - not the same.

Dappy777 · 19/11/2025 16:47

I know you said nothing too old worldy, but I would still urge you to try C J Sansom. And you must listen to Stephen Fry reading Sherlock Holmes. Laying in a hot bath listening to Fry read Holmes and Wodehouse is my idea of heaven.

FKAT · 20/11/2025 20:48

I have read and listened to Holmes over and over and now it just doesn't hit the spot. I need something where I don't know who dunnit.
