Currently reading quite a good Anthony Quinn novel about the (real-life) Wallace murder case of the 1930s, and continuing with the Dickens readalong. I must get going with the last volume of Proust, as I’m determined not to fall at the final hurdle!

I did review @EineReiseDurchDieZeit nowt earth shattering but included below. I just loved it, characters I keep thinking about, which is always the sign of a good book for me.

The book is about two teenagers, who both feel like outsiders in different ways, who gradually develop a friendship and then fall in love. It’s set in the 80s so I loved the old school mix tapes, and how it captures the joy and confusion of first love. There’s much more to the book than that though. There’s poverty and how those who haven’t been there don’t quite get it, identity, abusive step parents, bullying, and race. I absolutely loved this, a definite bold.

104 Upgrade by Blake Crouch

The book is set in the near-future where gene-editing technology has been banned after a global disaster, caused by a genetic project that Logan Ramsey worked on. Years later he tries to make up for this by working for a government agency that tracks down those working on illegal genetic manipulation. After being injured during a raid, Logan experiences mental and physical changes. There are a lot of interesting themes in the book, including what makes us human and the ethics of scientific progress. A lot of the book was taken up with various chase scenes, which I rarely enjoy, and although it was an interesting premise I just found this book dull and unimaginative overall.
