Sequels of classic children's/young adult books not by the orginal author

Looking for something to read next week when ds4 is in hospital. I've really got into reading books where a new author has written a book that's a sequel of an old children's classic.

I've read the new malory towers/st clares books
Katy, four kids and it, the magic faraway tree sequel by Jacqueline Wilson
5 children on the western front
And the new famous five books about Dick's grand children

Does anyone know of anymore?

I’m cheating because it’s a prequel but Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson.

Also Peter Pan in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean.

And The Willows in Winter by William Horwood.

They aren't exactly old, old classics. But a sequel to Patricia Leitch's "Jinny at Finmory" books has been released this month by author Sian Shipley. I haven't finished it yet, but she has the right feel and vocab of the originals.
It's published by the fab Jane Baxter who has a small business republishing many classic pony books.

There are two sequels to Heidi by someone else.

The Key to Flambards by Linda Newbury

I came to mention the Heidi sequels but see someone has beaten me to it. They were by the translator of the original books and a gentle read.

There's a 'Return to the secret garden'

Have you read the Flashman books? They follow a minor character (a bully) from Tom Brown’s schooldays and take him into adulthood in the army and all kinds of overseas adventures. Definitely not children’s books but follow on from a classic children’s book so may work for you.

Charles Tritten. I’ve not read them since I was of an age to read Heidi, but I certainly felt then that they got the tone wrong. Or perhaps just that Heidi being an adult means it’s a completely different affair.

I’ve just downloaded that 😀

There are also a couple of sequels to the “Jill” books with Jill grown up.

There are quite a few fill-ins and sequels for Elinor M Brent-Dyer's Chalet school series. I'd particularly recommend the ones by Katherine Bruce

CatChant · 14/10/2025 08:52

Helen Cresswell - The Return of the Psammead (Five Children and It sequel)
Holly Webb - Return to the Secret Garden
Hilary McKay - Wishing for Tomorrow (A Little Princess sequel)

These are brilliant, thankyou
