I’m just about to start the last book in this series and I’m bereft at finishing them, alongside joyful at reading it! I will wait until the weekend for a fully wallowing read.

Any recommendations for similar books? I just fell in love with them. They are wonderful.

I am on book 9 of the Ruth Galloway books which were recommended to me here after I was bereft at finishing all the Jane Casey Maeve Kerrigan books. I enjoy crime fiction with a recurring cast. I have also enjoyed Clare Mackintosh’s DI Ffion Morgan books and Robert Rinder’s crime books about junior barrister Adam Green.

Thanks, I’ll definitely look at the Clare Mackintosh books. I also like the Rob Rinder books.

I know what you mean - I dislike time travel stuff and never read it - but was desperate, so gave it a go, and really enjoyed it, to my surprise. When you find an author on your wavelength, it might be worth going outside you reading comfort zone...

Old thread I know, but...

I finally made it to Kings Lynn museum today and saw the remains of the Sea Henge where Dr Ruth started her career!

I really miss Dr Ruth.

Don't bother with Elly's new series - time travel rubbish!!

I’ve read ‘The Frozen people’ and really enjoyed that. Just started my first Ruth Galloway book.

Oh wow!

Thank you so much for reminding me of this, I really need to go there this summer.

Was it beautiful? I imagine it would be.

Have you tried LJ Ross, @Sminty2?

I also love Val McDermid’s books - the Karen Pirie novels and the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.

I have read a sample of the first Ruth Galloway book, but couldn’t get on with the way it was all written in the present tense. Does she do that all the time?

obviously not @Sminty2 here - haven't read LJR and not sure I am drawn to them. Who publishes her books? I have a lot of series books to catch up with too.

I first discovered Val McDermid in my teens when I found her first two novels in original Women's Press stripy covers from the library, and also read all her Kate Brannigan books when they came out. I was reluctant to read serial killer thrillres as her Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series seemed too violent initially, but then they became my favourite for a while, but I enjoy the move to police procedural with Karen Pirie and a return to a journalist with Allie in 1979. So I still have series books and some standalones TBR, but I am someone who buys most of her books soon after they come out, though I had that long when she moved into writing I was reluctant to read for a while. I caught up with her eventually.

While I love all Elly Griffths' recurring characters, and the novels too, I don't notice tense use in her books. They are not tightly enough edited though, now, I think. I do enjoy them all still though.

SweetChilliGirl · 28/05/2026 06:08

Have you read the Strike books? JK Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith - they're brilliant. Do read them in order, though.

I quite liked the Ruth Galloway books but agree that they would be mich better in the past tense. I had to power through that but did get used to it.

I also really like Val McDermid, particularly her Carol Jordan series.

I don't think the remains could be described as beautiful, but they were very well displayed, and the information panels really told the history very well.

Both me and my DD love the books, and we were in Norwich so thought we'd drive over. We were tempted to go to look at the actual site (although there is nothing there now), but it would have made our return trip to Norwich about 2 hours and we couldn't face it after a long day.

Ann Cleeves- the Jimmy Perez series?

CurlewKate · 28/05/2026 06:16

Also Anne Cleeves, the Matthew Venn series.

I’ve recently started the Rev. Merrily Watkins series, and it’s reminding me a bit of the Dr Ruth books. It’s totally different really (C of E vicar and exorcist) but a similar feel.

I've enjoyed both too.

I've often wondered if Ruth and Merrily would get on.

I think Ruth would get on well with Cat Serrailler. That would be some crossover!

BG2015 · 28/05/2026 07:25

I too like a series with the same character. My favourites are the Peter Grainger books with the great DC Smith - the first one is called An Accidental Death.

I also like the Karin Slaughter ones - Grant County and the Will Trent ones ( both have a strong lead character) they need to be read in order and there is a crossover over of the two characters.

Ive also discovered the Jane Casey / Maeve Kerrigan books but I've only read the first one so far.

Currently reading the fifth book by Charlie Gallagher.

Oh, I love the Serralier series. So sad she never finished the last one.

tonyhawks23 · 28/05/2026 08:39

I love the new time traveling series.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/05/2026 12:40

@elkiedee - the LJ Ross books are published by Penguin. I enjoy them because they are set in and around Newcastle and Northumberland, which is an area I love. Her characters are good too.

ToadRage · 28/05/2026 12:42

The Dorset crime series, Cumbria crime series, Zoe Finch series and pretty much anything else by Rachel McClean.
I second Karin Slaughter, Grant Count and Will Trent, the newer ones have been a little disappointing.

My favourite by far is Karen Rose, I have read ALL of them.

I love books in places. Finally made a trip to Norfolk after reading all the Ruth books.
I like all Elly Griffiths series except the Brighton ones, just can't get into them.
Lots of great suggestions on here. Although I love crime I don't like it too dark or light. So no cosy crime and no Stuart McBride (gruesome).
My recommendation would be Murdering in the New Forest by Carol Cole

Ann Cleeves- the Jimmy Perez series?

I must get back to Jimmy Perez, and read Vera, then watch them. There is a new Matthew Venn on its way, I think. I've met Ann Cleeves a few times, so I might hear her voice as i read occasionally, added bonus, as for me Ruth Galloway.

I didn’t like the tense use either. I’ll probably finish the first book, but it puts me off reading the other books.

Ooh, that's not clear is it? I am not confusing Domenica De Rosa (sp?) aka Elly Griffiths, with Ann Cleeves. I've only met one of them a few times, and I have both of them as FB friends. It's a hangover from days of hanging out at US crime fiction conventions and I could find myself talking to amazing people in a variety of settings. I just seemed to miss out several sentences. I self edit and i can't remember what I meant.

I don't care for books written in the present tense either, but I persevered with the Ruth Galloway books, and I found that after a while, I adjusted to it. I really like them, and I'm about half way through the series.
